Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Economics at the University of Roehampton offers applied and quantitative economics training that emphasises real-world problem-solving, critical thinking and data analysis. It suits students who want a career in economics, policy, business analysis, finance or research and provides support even for those without A-level maths, as quantitative skills are built into the curriculum.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students take core units such as Principles of Economics, Quantitative Methods for Economists, Business Data Analysis, and Economic Policy in Action, where they learn how economic agents make decisions, how markets operate, and how to apply basic maths and statistics to interpret data and understand economic phenomena. This year also includes modules like Global Economy and foundation quantitative modules that build confidence in analysis and practical tools like Excel and Stata. 

Year 2:
The second year typically advances students into Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, where they deepen their understanding of economic theory and how it explains market behaviour and national income dynamics. Alongside these, students often study Econometrics & Data Analysis, further developing quantitative skills to analyse real datasets and test economic hypotheses. 

Year 3:(Placement Year )

The BSc (Hons) Economics at the University of Roehampton offers an optional Professional Placement Year, usually taken between Years 2 and 3, allowing students to spend a full year working in industry. This placement enables students to apply economic theory, data analysis and quantitative skills in real workplaces such as business, finance, public policy or research, significantly strengthening employability and career clarity.

Year 4:
In the final year, students take advanced and applied modules such as Econometrics & Data Analysis at a higher level, Contemporary Economic Challenges, and Investment & Portfolio Management (or other subject options), applying economic reasoning to policy, sustainability, financial markets and modern economic issues. A Dissertation / Research Project integrates students’ knowledge, requiring independent research, data analysis and evaluation of real economic problems.
