Program Overview

The BSc Economics at the University of Southampton gives you an in-depth understanding of economic theory and how business and financial institutions shape society, supported by hands-on access to specialist facilities like FinLab and a behavioural economics laboratory. Curriculum structure

Year 1: You’ll cover core modules that build your foundation in economics, including Microeconomics I, Macroeconomics I and Quantitative Methods for Economics. Early on you’ll also get access to the Financial Laboratory where you’ll familiarise yourself with Bloomberg terminals and real-time financial data. 

Year 2: In the second year you’ll move into modules such as Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics and optional pathway modules (e.g., Econometrics or Behavioural Economics) depending on your chosen pathway (Economics, Econometrics or Behavioural). You’ll also begin applying quantitative methods to policy-oriented questions. 

Year 3: In your final year you’ll specialise further, choosing advanced modules in areas like Behavioural Economics, Dynamic Macroeconomics or Economics with Data and complete a major project/dissertation that lets you shape your own research direction and apply your skills in depth.
