Program Overview

The BSc Economics program at the University of Surrey is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in economic principles, analytical skills, and quantitative methods. The curriculum emphasizes the application of economic theories to contemporary issues, preparing graduates for diverse careers in economics and related fields. 

  • Year 1: Students undertake core modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics, and data analysis to build a foundational understanding of economic concepts and quantitative techniques.​ The first year is common across all economics tracks, including: Economics and Finance, Business Economics and Data Analytics

  • Year 2: The focus shifts to more advanced topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics, along with econometrics. These modules enhance analytical skills and the ability to interpret economic data.​

  • Year 3: Students choose from a range of optional modules, allowing for specialization in areas of interest. Options may include labor economics, development economics, and financial economics. Additionally, students have the opportunity to undertake an Economics Project, a 5,000-word research project that develops research and writing skills. ​

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the first year, students complete two compulsory Employability Modules designed to build essential career skills from the outset. These modules focus on CV and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and career planning, helping students identify their goals and begin mapping out a strategic path toward future employment or further study.

Final Year Economics Project: The Economics Project (ECO3050) is a final-year module that allows students to conduct independent research on a chosen economic topic, culminating in a comprehensive dissertation. This project develops critical thinking, analytical, and academic writing skills.

The Professional Training Year (PTY) in Surrey’s BSc Economics program offers students the opportunity to spend up to a year working between their second and final year with one of over 2,300 partner organizations in the UK or abroad. Past placements include prestigious employers like the Bank of England, EY, the Home Office, Acturis Ltd, and Efftel. Each placement is jointly supervised by a workplace mentor and a university academic, and students are assessed through a reflective Placement Report that captures their professional growth and applied economic understanding.

Study abroad opportunities are also available through partnerships with universities worldwide, allowing students to gain international experience and earn credits towards their degree. ​Partner universities in countries like Hong Kong, Australia, South Korea, Germany, etc.
