The BSc (Hons) Economics degree offers an in-depth understanding of both microeconomics and macroeconomics, with a focus on econometrics. The program develops critical analytical skills to simplify and address economic issues, both theoretically and empirically. It also provides insights into global and local economic trends, institutions, and policies.

Teaching and Class Structure:

  • Class Sizes: Lecture sizes vary from large (200-600 students) to smaller support classes (15-20 students).
  • Contact Hours: First year - 14-15 hours/week; Second year - 12 hours/week; Final year - 10 hours/week.

Assessment Methods: A mix of coursework and final exams, with assessments varying by module.

Established in 1965, the Department has grown into one of the largest and most respected economics departments globally. The Department of Economics at Warwick is highly regarded:​ Ranked 1st in the Good University Guide 2025. Ranked 23rd globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 for Economics and Econometrics.
 

Notable alumni achievements: 

Professor Oliver Hart: Awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2016.. Professor James Robinson: Joint recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2024.

Students may work as research assistants on faculty projects or pursue independent research under supervision, developing skills in data analysis, critical thinking, and academic writing.

Internships: The Department facilitates connections with employers, offering students opportunities for internships that provide practical experience and industry insights. The Department's annual Careers in Economics Event connects students with organizations offering internships, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings and gain valuable work experience. An optional 30-week placement after the second year, offering invaluable real-world experience and enhancing employability.

Student Clubs: Students can join various societies and clubs related to economics, fostering a community of like-minded individuals and providing platforms for discussion, networking, and professional development. Economics-related societies organise events, guest lectures, and workshops, providing platforms for students to engage with professionals, discuss economic issues, and develop leadership skills.

Availability of study abroad programs or placement years. Students have the opportunity to undertake a study abroad year, extending their degree to four years. Successful completion results in the degree title being amended to include 'with Study Abroad'.

On-campus recruitment or placement services: The Department organizes events like the Careers in Economics Fair, connecting students with potential employers and providing insights into various career paths. Employers that have participated include:  FTI Consulting, Economic Insight, Competition and Markets Authority, CEPA, Handelsbanken, Cornerstone Research, NERA, Compass Lexecon, Ofwat, RBB Economics, The Brattle Group, Home Office, Oxera, Charles River Associates, Grant Thornton, Fathom Consulting, Department for Education, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

Career support and services offered by the university: Students have access to dedicated career consultants, workshops, and resources tailored to economics students, assisting with career planning, job applications, and interview preparation.

Further studies and placement rates: A significant portion of graduates opt for further studies, enrolling in postgraduate programs at renowned institutions. The Department's Graduate Destinations Report 2022 indicates that 25% of respondents pursued further study. ​The median salary for the 2019/20 cohort was reported at £35,000.
