Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Economics at University of York gives you an excellent foundation in economic theory, quantitative methods and policy analysis — and is ideal if you’re curious about how markets, governments and individuals shape the economy. You’ll explore core ideas like Principles of Economics and Quantitative Methods while tailoring your degree through optional modules and a dissertation in your final year. 

 

Curriculum structure

 

  • Year 1: You’ll start with key units such as Principles of Economics and Quantitative Methods for Economics, building the tools to interpret market behaviour and economic data. You’ll also engage with modules like Economic Data Analysis which strengthen your grounding in statistics and evidence-based thinking. 

  • Year 2: In your second year you’ll dive deeper into modules such as Microeconomic Theory and Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy, applying your tools to policy challenges and firm behaviour. You’ll also begin optional topics, enabling you to specialise further, for example in behavioural or environmental economics. 

  • Year 3: Your final year focuses on advanced study — such as Econometric Analysis and Game Theory & Strategic Behaviour — and culminates in a major independent project or dissertation. This provides you flexible choice to explore areas like international development, finance or data analytics, preparing you for professional or academic careers.
