International Relations and Politics BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Program Overview

This degree is perfect for anyone who wants to understand how the world really works — from power struggles between nations to the decisions shaping our daily lives. At Portsmouth, you’ll explore both international relations and politics in depth, gaining the knowledge, analytical skills, and global awareness to make a difference in government, diplomacy, media, or international development.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year lays the groundwork for understanding political systems and global affairs. Through modules like Introduction to Politics and International Relations, Key Themes in International Relations, and Analysing Politics: Britain and Beyond, you’ll learn how governments function, why countries go to war, and what drives cooperation between nations. You’ll also build vital academic and research skills that will support you throughout your degree.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll start thinking more critically about how politics operates and why people make the decisions they do. Core modules such as Theorising International Politics and Bending the Truth a Little? Research Methods in Politics, International Relations and Development help you understand different political theories and how to analyse complex issues using real data. You can also tailor your studies with optional modules on foreign policy, global security, or regional politics.

Year 3
Your final year is all about independence and focus. You’ll complete a major research project or dissertation on a topic that inspires you — from human rights to global diplomacy. You can choose specialist modules on subjects such as Ideology and Political Movements or Global Political Economy. There’s also the opportunity to take a placement or study abroad year, applying your skills in a real-world or international setting.
