Politics and International Relations BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Keele University

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how governments make decisions, how global issues like war, climate change, or inequality are tackled, or what really drives international cooperation and conflict — this course is for you. Keele’s Politics and International Relations BA gives you a big-picture understanding of the world while helping you build the skills to analyse, debate, and influence real political change.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll explore the foundations of politics and international relations — how power operates, why nations behave the way they do, and how ideas like democracy and human rights shape the modern world. You’ll study modules such as Understanding Contemporary World Politics and Making Sense of Politics, alongside Becoming a Social Scientist, which develops your research and analytical skills. Optional modules like Regional Studies in World Politics or Decolonising World Politics let you focus on the regions or global issues that interest you most.

Year 2
Your second year deepens your understanding of global challenges and policymaking. Through modules like Building a Better World? and Social Science Research Methods and Data Analysis, you’ll learn how political ideas are put into action — and how to evaluate their success. You can also choose options such as Foreign Policy, Environmental Politics and Policy, or Public Policy and How to Make It. This is also the stage where you can take a work placement and start gaining experience in a political, NGO, or public sector setting.

Year 3
By your final year, you’ll be ready to bring everything together through your dissertation — an independent research project on a topic you care about. You’ll also have the chance to study specialist modules like Parliamentary Studies (developed with the UK Parliament), Genocide and Death in World Politics, or Global Futures. You’ll leave with not just deep academic insight but also the confidence and skills to apply your learning in the real world.
