International Relations BA (Hons) degree

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how countries interact, why conflicts happen, and how global decisions shape our everyday lives, Loughborough’s BA International Relations is designed for you. This degree explores the forces that drive diplomacy, security, and global cooperation — and builds the skills you’ll need to influence change in the real world.

 Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundations
Your first year is all about setting the scene. You’ll study the big ideas that shape global politics through modules like International Political Theory, The Making and Unmaking of the World Order, and Politics and Government. You’ll also look at how identities and inequalities shape societies and have the chance to learn a new language — giving you a strong base for deeper exploration ahead.

Year 2 – Expanding your global perspective
In second year, you’ll dive deeper into how international politics plays out in real life. Through modules such as State, Violence and Terrorism, The Asia-Pacific in Global Politics, and War in the 21st Century, you’ll examine conflicts, regional power dynamics, and the role of global institutions. This is where you start connecting theory with the real world — learning to think critically about how states act and why.

Final Year – Specialising and leading your own research
Your final year is where you take control of your learning. You’ll choose specialist modules like International Politics of the Middle East and Emerging Threats in the 21st Century, and you’ll complete an independent Dissertation on a topic that inspires you. By the end, you’ll be ready to apply your knowledge to real-world challenges — whether in policy, research, or diplomacy.
