This degree is perfect if you want to combine a passion for world politics with a love for the Irish language and culture. You’ll gain the tools to analyse global events, conflicts, and cooperation, while also becoming confident in Irish—both spoken and written—through literature, film, and cultural studies.
Curriculum structure
Year 1
You’ll start by building the essentials. On the politics side, modules like World Politics, Perspectives on Politics, and Comparative Politics will give you a solid grasp of how governments, societies, and international systems work. Alongside this, Gaeilge 1 will boost your Irish speaking and writing skills, while introducing you to Irish society, phonetics, and grammar.
Year 2
Your second year goes deeper. A core module in International Relations Theory helps you understand the big ideas behind world politics. You’ll also take a double-weighted Irish module, giving you more intensive language practice, plus the option to explore areas such as translation studies, media, or politics of conflict.
Year 3
In your final year, you’ll focus on what excites you most. You’ll continue advancing your Irish through another double-weighted module, and then choose from specialist options in both International Relations and Irish. You can either complete a dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about or take on a placement in an Irish-language organisation, gaining real-world experience to boost your career.
Focus areas
Global politics, conflict and cooperation, European integration, modern Irish language, translation studies, folklore and identity, media and culture.
Learning outcomes
You’ll graduate with the ability to analyse international issues with confidence, communicate fluently in Irish, carry out independent research, and apply your knowledge in real-world political or cultural contexts.

This degree isn’t just about lectures and essays — it’s designed to get you out into the world, using your Irish and applying your knowledge of international politics in real settings. From immersive language experiences in Donegal to internships with Irish-language organisations, you’ll be building practical skills employers value, all while living the culture you’re studying. You’ll also have access to specialist online learning tools, student societies, and one of the best university libraries in the UK to support your journey.
Here’s how you’ll gain that real-world experience:
Gaeltacht residentials – After your first and second years, you’ll spend three weeks in the Donegal Gaeltacht, completely immersed in the Irish language and culture, surrounded by native speakers.
‘Gairmeacha le Gaeilge’ internship – In your final year, you can complete a 50-hour placement in an Irish-language organisation, working directly through Irish in areas like media, education, or cultural services.
Political and public sector placements – As an IR student, you’ll also have opportunities to gain experience in government departments, local councils, or media organisations, connecting theory with practice.
Learning Branch software – A dedicated online platform designed for Irish learners, where you can complete interactive tasks to strengthen your language skills outside class.
Irish-language student life – Join An Cumann Gaelach (the Irish society) for events, music, and cultural activities, or apply to live in the Irish Language Residential Scheme, where you’ll share accommodation with other Irish speakers.
World-class library access – Queen’s McClay Library gives you everything from rare Irish texts to political archives and digital databases, supporting both your essays and your research projects.
