If you’re curious about global politics, how countries interact, and the challenges the world faces today, the BA International Relations at Exeter is a fantastic choice. You’ll study the big ideas that shape international relations, explore issues like globalisation, security, and inequality, and even have the chance to make your degree stand out with a year abroad or a work placement year, giving you valuable real-world experience alongside your studies.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year gives you a strong foundation in world politics. Core modules such as Globalisation of World Politics, Challenges of World Politics in the 21st Century, and International Politics of the Global South introduce you to key themes and debates. You’ll also take Critical Skills for Politics and International Relations, which sharpens your writing, research, and argumentation skills — essential tools for success.

Year 2

In your second year, you start to go deeper. Modules like Contemporary Theories of World Politics, Security Studies, and The Politics of the World Economy build your understanding of how global systems really work. You’ll also learn research methods through Introduction to Research Design in Politics and International Relations, preparing you for your own independent projects.

Year 3 (or Year Abroad / Employment Year)

  • If you stay on the 3-year route, you’ll tackle modules like Futures of International Relations and complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice, alongside optional specialist modules.

  • If you choose the Study Abroad year, you’ll spend your third year at a partner university overseas, experiencing international politics first-hand and bringing a global edge to your degree.

  • If you choose the Employment Experience year, you’ll spend a year on a graduate-level placement — putting your knowledge into practice, gaining workplace skills, and building connections for the future.
