3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is perfect if you’re curious about global politics but also want to specialise in one of the world’s most dynamic regions: East Asia. You’ll study how countries interact on the world stage, while also exploring the history, culture, and languages of places like China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You’ll start with the essentials of politics and international relations, learning how governments, states, and institutions shape our world. At the same time, you’ll dive into East Asian history, culture, or even pick up a new language—like Japanese or Chinese—so you can build real regional expertise from day one.
Year 2
This is where the course really deepens. You’ll get into big debates about global security and international relations theory, while also exploring East Asia’s modern transformations—think China’s rapid rise, Japan’s role in global affairs, or the politics of Southeast Asia. If you’ve started a language, you can keep building on it, and you’ll have flexibility to choose topics that match your interests.
Year 3
Your final year is about specialising and showcasing what you’ve learned. You’ll work on a dissertation or project—this is your chance to dig deep into a topic you’re passionate about, whether it’s East Asian politics, international security, or cultural change. Plus, you’ll choose advanced modules that let you study everything from global Korea to East Asia’s political economy, British foreign policy, or even Japanese cinema.
Focus areas
International relations, global security, East Asian politics, history, culture, language, and independent research.
Learning outcomes
By the time you graduate, you’ll be confident analysing global issues, understanding East Asian societies in context, and applying your knowledge in real-world debates. You’ll also sharpen transferable skills—research, communication, cultural awareness—that employers and postgraduate programs value highly.
Professional alignment
While it’s not tied to a single professional body, this course is designed with careers in mind. The mix of international politics and East Asian expertise is highly relevant for roles in diplomacy, NGOs, international business, media, and cultural organisations. You’ll also have opportunities for study abroad or a work placement to build practical experience.
Reputation
Leeds is a Russell Group university, meaning you’ll be taught by experts who are leaders in their fields. Employers actively seek out Leeds graduates, and the university is consistently ranked among the UK’s top institutions for student experience and graduate outcomes.
One of the best parts of this degree is how much of it is hands-on. You won’t just sit in lectures — you’ll actually use the resources, test your skills, and take part in experiences that prepare you for life after uni. Whether it’s practicing an East Asian language, tackling a real research project, or spending time abroad, the course is built to make you confident in the world beyond the classroom.
Here’s how that looks in practice:
Study Abroad or Placement Year – between your second and final year, you can choose to spend a year abroad or take on a work placement. Both give you real-world insight and a chance to apply what you’ve learned in an international setting.
Language Zone – if you pick up an East Asian language, you’ll use the Language Zone, which is packed with software, audio-visual tools, magazines, books, and even conversation groups to help you practice with other students and native speakers.
World-class Libraries – Leeds has three main libraries, with incredible collections on East Asia and international politics. You’ll also get access to digital archives and training on how to use them effectively.
Final Year Dissertation or Project – you’ll get one-to-one guidance to design and complete a major piece of research or even a public engagement project, showcasing the specialist knowledge and independent skills you’ve built.
Group Work & Presentations – many modules include group tasks, debates, or presentations, helping you become confident communicating complex ideas and working as part of a team.
One of the biggest advantages of this course is that it gives you two things employers love: a strong understanding of how the world works, and specialist knowledge of one of its most important regions. That opens doors to careers in government, NGOs, international business, media, and beyond. Our graduates often go on to roles such as policy analyst, diplomat or foreign service officer, NGO or development worker, or cultural/media specialist with an international focus.
Here’s how Leeds sets you up for success:
Careers Centre & School Support – from CV workshops and mock interviews to employer networking events, you’ll get tailored guidance. The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies also brings in alumni and employers who value regional expertise and language skills.
Work placement & year abroad options – you can take a year in industry or study at one of Leeds’ 300+ global partner universities. Both experiences give you real-world confidence and stand out to employers.
Employer connections – Leeds has strong links with global companies, NGOs, and government organisations. Students have had exposure to names like JP Morgan Asia, the UN, Deloitte, and others through events and career fairs.
Recognised outcomes – while salaries vary depending on your path, Leeds graduates are highly sought after. The Russell Group reputation and your unique skillset (international politics + East Asia expertise) give you an edge in a competitive job market.
Further Academic Progression:
If you’d like to continue your studies, you’ll have plenty of options. Many graduates move on to master’s degrees in International Relations, East Asian Studies, Global Security, or Development Studies. Others choose to stay in academia for a PhD or research project, often involving fieldwork in East Asia.
