Program Overview

The BA (Hons) International Relations at the University of Portsmouth is all about understanding the world we live in—how countries interact, why conflicts happen, and how global issues like migration, human rights, and climate change shape our lives. This course is perfect for curious, globally-minded students who want to make sense of international politics and explore careers in diplomacy, policy, or humanitarian work.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Foundations of International Relations

In your first year, you'll get a solid grounding in politics and international relations. Modules like Introduction to Politics and International Relations introduce the key ideas and theories that explain how countries relate to each other and tackle global challenges. You'll also study Introduction to Sustainability and the Environment, which looks at issues like development and climate change, and Introduction to Urban Studies, which explores how cities work and the people who live in them. A short module on Legal Ethics helps you think about how law, morality, and society intersect in political decision-making.

Year 2: Building Knowledge and Skills

The second year dives deeper. In Critical Thinking and Professional Identity, you'll sharpen your research, writing, and public speaking skills—tools you'll use throughout your career. Global Development examines how institutions and policies try to reduce inequality and conflict, while Key Themes in International Relations and Political Thought give you a deeper understanding of political ideas, from liberty and justice to human nature and society.

Year 3: Specialisation and Real-World Application

In your final year, you can focus on the areas that interest you most. Modules like Theorising International Politics explore advanced theories, including Feminist and Post-Colonial approaches, while Research Methods in Politics, International Relations and Development equips you to conduct independent research and make sense of complex global issues. You can also choose optional modules such as Analysing Foreign Policy or Development and Democracy in Latin America, and even take part in a simulated academic conference to present your own ideas.
