University of Westminster

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by global politics and want to understand China’s growing role in the world, this degree is designed for you. The Chinese and International Relations BA Honours at the University of Westminster blends advanced Chinese language learning with an in-depth study of international relations, diplomacy, and global affairs — preparing you for an international career where cultural fluency truly matters.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start by building a strong foundation in both subjects. Core modules such as Introduction to International Relations and Critical Perspectives on Global Politics introduce you to the systems and ideas shaping today’s world. At the same time, you’ll explore the Chinese World and the Word and Introduction to the Study of Language and Culture, where you’ll begin learning the Chinese language and gain insight into its cultural context.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll go deeper — tackling pressing global issues through modules like Global Security and Geopolitics, while refining your analytical and research skills in Theorising Politics and International Relations. On the language side, modules such as Expressions of Chinese Culture and Language in the Public Space help you explore Chinese media, identity, and society, while boosting your fluency and confidence in communication.

Professional Experience / Study Abroad Year
This optional year is a real highlight. You can either work in a professional setting or study abroad in a Chinese-speaking country. It’s an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the language, experience Chinese culture first-hand, and gain the kind of international perspective that employers love.

Year 3 (Final Year)
Your final year pulls everything together. You’ll take modules like Foreign Policy and Diplomacy in a Changing World and Postcolonial Politics and International Relations, examining how global power structures evolve. In Themes in Contemporary Chinese Studies and Identities on the Move, you’ll apply your language and analytical skills to current issues in China and beyond. You’ll also complete a Final Year Project, where you research a topic you’re passionate about and showcase your global expertise.
