Durham University

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how power works — from decisions made in parliaments to negotiations on the global stage — Durham’s BA Politics and International Relations is designed for you. This degree explores how political ideas shape societies, how states interact, and how global challenges are addressed, preparing you for a career that influences real change in the world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building strong foundations
Your first year introduces you to the key principles and tools of political study. Through core modules like Introduction to Political Theory, Introduction to Comparative Politics, Introduction to International Relations, and Researching Politics and International Relations, you’ll learn how political systems work, how states interact, and how ideas such as sovereignty, power, and justice have evolved. Optional modules such as Democratic Political Systems, International Security, Interdependence and Organisation, and Perspectives of Political Economy allow you to start tailoring your studies to your interests.

Year 2 – Expanding your understanding
In the second year, you’ll deepen your knowledge and sharpen your analytical skills. Modules such as International Theory, Foundations of Western Political Thought, and Analytical Politics explore how political ideas shape institutions and decisions across the globe. You’ll also work on a Research Project, applying political science methods to investigate real-world issues. This is the year you begin to think critically about global governance, the role of organisations like the UN or EU, and the impact of political ideologies on international affairs.

Year 3 – Specialising and creating impact
Your final year is where you bring everything together. You’ll complete an independent Dissertation on a topic that excites you — from climate diplomacy to democratic movements or foreign policy strategy. Alongside this, you’ll choose from a range of advanced optional modules such as China in Global Political Economy, Theories of Liberty, Elections and British Politics, Decolonising International Society, and Social and Political Philosophy. This final stage is about deepening your expertise and preparing for the career or postgraduate path you want to pursue.
