Keele’s Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) degree gives you a powerful combination of skills to understand the world — from questioning beliefs and ethics, to analysing governments, to exploring how economies shape people’s lives. It’s a brilliant choice if you enjoy big conversations, want to make sense of global issues, and are looking for a degree that opens doors across business, policy, law, and international work.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 – Building Your Foundations
In your first year, you’ll get a rich introduction to all three subjects. Philosophy as Reason and Wonder helps you think clearly about truth, ethics and reality; Making Sense of Politics explains how power works, why political systems succeed or fail, and how democracy is changing; and Sustainability and the Global Economy lets you explore the economic forces behind climate change, inequality and global development. You’ll also take Becoming a Social Scientist, which strengthens your academic skills and helps you learn how real research is done.
Year 2 – Deepening Your Understanding
Your second year lets you move beyond the basics and start connecting the three disciplines. You’ll study more advanced questions in ethics, political thought and economic analysis, and begin choosing modules that match your interests — whether that’s political economy, international relations, social justice, behavioural economics or philosophical theory. This is the year where your confidence grows as you apply your learning through debates, seminars and case studies.
Year 3 – Shaping Your Specialism
In your final year, you bring together everything you’ve learned. You can choose to complete a major research project such as a Philosophy Dissertation, Politics & IR Dissertation, or Economics Dissertation, depending on where you want to deepen your expertise. Alongside this, you’ll take specialist modules and can choose practical opportunities like placements or a study abroad year — all designed to help you graduate with real experience and clarity about your future path.

What makes PPE at Keele so exciting is how often you get to step beyond theory and try things for yourself. You won’t just learn about political systems, ethical debates or economic models — you’ll experience them in action through hands-on projects, real data analysis, teamwork, and opportunities to work with external partners. Keele gives you the digital tools, dedicated spaces and flexible pathways that help you grow your confidence and apply your knowledge in real-world contexts.
Here’s how those experiences come to life across the degree:
Explore real economic data in Keele’s Bloomberg Lab, using the industry-standard Bloomberg Terminal to understand markets, trends and financial behaviour — a huge advantage if you’re considering careers in business, finance or policy.
Take part in small-group political simulations, especially in modules like Making Sense of Politics, where you debate real policy issues and practise decision-making just like government, NGOs or public sector teams do.
Work on a collaborative team project in Becoming a Social Scientist, where you and your classmates tackle an actual real-world problem alongside an external organisation — a chance to apply PPE thinking to a meaningful challenge.
Personalise your experience with a placement year, entrepreneurship year or study abroad, giving you the freedom to gain professional exposure, build a venture, or explore another country while still completing your degree.
Complete an independent dissertation or research project in your final year, letting you immerse yourself in a topic you genuinely care about and graduate with specialist expertise.
A PPE degree from Keele prepares you for a future where you can make a real impact. Because you’re studying three powerful disciplines together, you’ll graduate with the kind of analytical, strategic, and communication skills that employers genuinely look for. Many students go on to roles such as policy advisor in government, financial or economic analyst in business, project manager in charities or NGOs, or communications and strategy roles in global organisations.
To support your next steps, Keele makes sure you’re not navigating the job market alone:
You’ll have access to Keele’s Careers & Employability team, offering personalised support through CV building, interview practice, alumni mentoring, and regular employer networking events.

The programme gives you the option of a work placement year, helping you gain practical experience and industry exposure before you graduate.

You will join a global alumni community, with graduates working in government departments, financial institutions, NGOs, think tanks, and education.
