Politics and Sociology BSc (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Keele University

Program Overview

Keele’s Politics and Sociology degree helps you understand how societies work, why people behave the way they do, and how political decisions shape everyday life. It’s a great fit for students who are curious about global issues, inequality, activism, identity, and power — and who want a degree that blends social insight with real-world political understanding.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year introduces you to the big ideas that shape politics and society through modules like Making Sense of Politics, Understanding Inequalities, Becoming a Social Scientist, and Power, Identity and Resistance. You’ll explore how political systems operate, why social divisions exist, and how identities are formed — all while developing research and professional skills that set the tone for the rest of your degree.

Year 2

In the second year, your studies become more applied and analytical. You’ll look at how democracy is challenged around the world in Global Democracy under Threat: Resilience or Retreat?, and rethink classical theories in Redefining Social Theory: Digital and Global Perspectives. Alongside these, modules like Social Science Research Methods and Data Analysis and Social Sciences at Work help you build strong data skills, understand how research is used in the real world, and explore placement opportunities that connect your studies to future careers.

Year 3

Your final year is where you specialise and bring everything together. Through modules such as Engaged Social Science, a Dissertation in Politics, or an Independent Study Project in Sociology, you’ll design and lead your own research. You can also choose from exciting advanced topics like The Dark Side of Politics, Gender, Sexuality and Power, Building a Better Future, or Social Futures, allowing you to focus on issues that inspire you and shape your future direction.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the best parts of studying Politics and Sociology at Keele is how often you get to step into real-world situations and apply what you’re learning. You won’t just talk about social issues or political systems — you’ll investigate them, work with organisations, carry out research, and build the kind of practical experience that employers genuinely value. Keele supports this with modern learning spaces, digital tools, placement opportunities and active research centres that bring your subject to life.

To give you a clearer picture, here’s what your hands-on experience looks like:

  • Work Placement for Social Sciences, where you can spend time in councils, charities or other public-sector organisations, complete a SWOT analysis, build a professional portfolio, and present your work — a real step into the world of employment.

  • Keele Learning Environment (KLE) gives you access to digital resources, collaborative tools, lecture recordings and research materials that you’ll use to practise analysis, teamwork and academic writing.

  • Modules like Social Science Research Methods and Data Analysis and Becoming a Social Scientist help you apply both qualitative and quantitative techniques to real policy questions and social-science challenges.

  • Group projects, debates and seminars allow you to test ideas, present your viewpoints and work closely with classmates — mirroring the collaborative nature of careers in government, NGOs and community organisations.

  • Access to the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion (KISI) and other active research hubs exposes you to real social-justice issues, community projects and contemporary political research happening on campus.

And Keele gives you strong support as you prepare for your next steps:
