4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how power works — from global conflicts to local elections — Lancaster’s Politics (Placement Year) BA (Hons) will give you the knowledge and hands-on experience to explore it. This degree is perfect if you’re curious about ideas, policy, and change, and want to combine academic study with a year of professional experience in government, NGOs, or related organisations.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start by building a strong foundation in political thinking. Core modules such as British Politics: Political Ideas in Action and Global Challenges in World Politics introduce you to big debates about democracy, power, and global cooperation. You’ll also explore Parties, Populism, and Protest and Political Theory in a Troubled World, where you’ll unpack the forces driving social movements and the values that shape modern politics.

Year 2
The second year is about sharpening your research and analytical skills. In Theories of Power and the State, you’ll examine how states exercise authority, while Understanding Political Research equips you with the methods to investigate political questions. Alongside these, you’ll choose from optional modules like Government and Leadership in an Unstable World or Politics of the Global South, giving you the chance to study leadership, policy challenges, and regional politics in more depth.

Year 3 (Placement Year)
Your third year takes you out of the classroom and into the workplace. Whether it’s a government office, think tank, NGO, or consultancy, you’ll spend 9–12 months gaining real-world experience that makes your CV stand out. The university’s Careers & Placements team will support you throughout, helping you turn your placement into a stepping stone for your future career.

Year 4
Returning to Lancaster, you’ll bring together everything you’ve learned in a final-year dissertation — your chance to investigate a topic you’re truly passionate about. Alongside this, you’ll take advanced modules like Policymaking in the Real World, Democracy Under Pressure, or The Politics of Borders and Migration, all designed to deepen your expertise and prepare you for roles in policy, research, and beyond.

Focus areas: Political theory, public policy, governance, comparative and global politics, research methods, conflict & security, regional studies

Learning outcomes: You’ll graduate ready to analyse political systems, evaluate policies, conduct your own research, and apply your knowledge to real-world issues.

Professional alignment: While not tied to a single professional accreditation, the program’s placement year, research-led teaching, and links to UK Parliament through the Parliamentary Studies module give you genuine exposure to policymaking and public institutions.

Reputation: Lancaster is ranked 2nd in the UK for Research Power in Politics (REF 2021), reflecting its strong teaching and research environment. Graduates have gone on to careers in the civil service, public policy, NGOs, journalism, and consultancy, as well as postgraduate study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Lancaster, your Politics degree is designed to move far beyond lectures and essays — it’s about learning by doing. From the very beginning, you’ll be encouraged to test ideas in real political settings, practice the skills used by policymakers, and build a CV that shows real experience. With a placement year built into the course, you’ll graduate not only with academic knowledge but also with the kind of professional confidence employers notice right away.

Here are some of the practical opportunities you’ll benefit from:

  • Policy Labs and Simulations – Take part in activities like mock select committees, citizens’ assemblies, and Prime Minister’s Questions sessions, where you’ll step into the shoes of politicians and advisors.

  • Parliamentary Studies Module – Delivered in partnership with the UK Parliament and the Institute for Government, this gives you direct access to MPs, parliamentary officials, and policy experts.

  • Research Internships – Through the Richardson Institute for Peace Studies, you can work on live projects with NGOs, charities, and policy organisations, sometimes even seeing your research published.

  • Final-Year Dissertation – Undertake an independent research project on a political issue that matters to you, with close guidance from Lancaster’s expert academics.

  • Guest Lectures & Visits – Meet Ambassadors, policymakers, and senior advisors through special talks, and take part in visits to key political institutions.
