Lancaster’s Politics BA (Hons) gives you the chance to dive into the big questions of power, democracy, and global change, while also tackling real-world policy issues. It’s a great fit if you’re curious about how societies are governed, want to make sense of today’s political challenges, and see yourself shaping debates or influencing decisions in the future.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year is all about building a strong foundation. You’ll study modules like British Politics: Political Ideas in Action and Global Challenges in World Politics, exploring how politics works at home and across the world. You’ll also take part in the Policy Lab, where you work in groups to design practical solutions to pressing problems, and the Thinking Globally discovery module, which encourages you to look at political issues from multiple perspectives.
Year 2
In your second year, you’ll dig deeper into core themes such as Theories of Power and the State and Understanding Political Research. Optional modules like Politics of the Global South or Politics of Policy let you start shaping your degree around your own interests. Alongside these, you’ll take a discovery module that helps you build professional skills—whether that’s teamwork, entrepreneurship, cultural diversity, or social engagement. By the end of the year, you’ll be confident using research tools and ready to link theory with practice.
Year 3
Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll complete a Politics and International Relations Dissertation, giving you the freedom to research a topic you really care about, guided by an expert supervisor. At the same time, you’ll choose advanced modules such as Parliamentary Studies, Policymaking in the Real World, or Democracy Under Pressure, which connect directly to how politics is practiced today. This year is about building independence, sharpening your analysis, and preparing for the next step after graduation.
Focus areas: power and the state, public policy, comparative politics, global governance, political theory, security and technology
Learning outcomes: the ability to evaluate political systems, design and critique policy, conduct both qualitative and quantitative research, and communicate political arguments with clarity and impact
Professional alignment (accreditation): While not tied to formal professional licensing, the program gives you valuable exposure to practice through modules like Parliamentary Studies (delivered in partnership with the UK Parliament) and the Politics Policy School, where you collaborate with government teams on live policy challenges.
Reputation (employability rankings): Lancaster ranks 2nd in the UK for Research Power in Politics (REF 2021), and its graduates are highly valued in fields such as government, NGOs, public affairs, journalism, and international organisations
At Lancaster, Politics is brought to life through hands-on experiences that take you well beyond textbooks. You’ll step into the shoes of policymakers, parliamentarians, and analysts, gaining practical skills that prepare you for real-world challenges. From live debates to professional placements, the course is designed so that every year adds something valuable to your CV as well as your learning.
Here’s what makes the experience unique:
Work in policy labs and case studies, tackling issues like climate change, inequality, or migration, and learn how to design and test solutions just like a real advisor.
Take part in mock Prime Minister’s Questions, select committees, and citizens’ assemblies, giving you a taste of how politics actually works behind closed doors.
Choose the Parliamentary Studies module to work directly with MPs, parliamentary officials, and the Institute for Government — an opportunity very few UK universities can offer.
Join the Policy School, where you’ll collaborate with HM Government’s Open Innovation team on real policy challenges.
Gain professional experience through the Policymaking in the Real World placement module, applying your skills in a workplace setting.
Apply for internships through the Richardson Institute, working with NGOs, think tanks, and charities on live research projects.
Build a portfolio of work — from policy briefs and blogs to podcasts and research reports — that you can showcase to employers.
Train in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, from working with large datasets to conducting interviews and critical discourse analysis.
Meet professionals through guest lectures and visits to Parliament, where you’ll hear directly from MPs, clerks, and senior policy advisors.
Use Lancaster’s digital learning platforms, extensive library, and research centres to support your projects and independent dissertation.
