Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how our world works — from global conflicts and diplomacy to power struggles and peacebuilding — Loughborough’s BA (Hons) International Relations is designed for you. This degree blends political theory with real-world issues, helping you build the knowledge and analytical skills to shape international policy, diplomacy, or global strategy careers.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundations
Your first year sets the stage, introducing you to the key ideas and debates that shape global politics. Through modules like Academic Foundations in International Relations, Politics and History, The Contemporary World Arena, Power, Politics and Ideology in Modern Europe, and International Political Theory, you’ll learn how states interact, why conflicts emerge, and how the world order has evolved. This year is all about gaining the context and confidence to think critically about global issues.

Year 2 – Expanding Your Perspectives
In your second year, you’ll deepen your understanding and sharpen your analytical skills. Core modules such as Theories and Methods in Political Research, Politics of Development, and Comparative Political Economy: Capitalism, Democracy and the State teach you how to approach international relations from different angles. You can also choose specialist options like Critical Security Studies or Small Wars, exploring how political decisions affect peace, security, and development worldwide.

Final Year – Specialising and Leading Your Own Research
Your final year is where you take ownership of your learning. You’ll complete a Dissertation on a topic that inspires you and tailor your studies through advanced modules such as International Conflict Management, War in the 21st Century, Global Politics of Asia-Pacific, Emerging Threats, or Gender and Global Politics. This year refines your expertise and prepares you for careers in policy, government, NGOs, or further academic study.
