4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re curious about how governments make decisions, why global events unfold the way they do, and how ordinary people shape politics, this degree is a great fit for you. Manchester Met’s BA (Hons) Politics lets you explore all of this while giving you the chance to build real-world experience through a placement year or a year abroad.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year is all about building a strong foundation. You’ll study topics like Modern Political Thought, learn how political ideas shape society, and take Applied Research Methods so you understand how political decisions are analysed in the real world. You’ll also take Fit for the Future, which prepares you with essential academic and professional skills as you begin your journey in political studies.
Year 2
In second year, the course becomes more exciting and specialised. You’ll explore how politics works in the digital age, how governments respond to global challenges, and how identity, culture and the environment influence political behaviour. This is also the point where you start shaping your own interests and preparing for your placement or overseas year.
Year 3 – Placement or Overseas Study
Your third year is your chance to step outside the classroom. You can either work full-time with an organisation in the UK or spend the year studying abroad. This year is designed to give you confidence, real professional experience and a stronger CV — all while seeing how politics operates on the ground.
Year 4
In your final year, you return to deeper academic study while building on everything you’ve learned from your placement or year abroad. You’ll take advanced modules on topics like international relations, climate politics or digital society, and complete an independent research project. By the end of the year, you’ll graduate with both academic knowledge and hands-on experience.
Focus Areas
power relations, digital politics, international policy, environmental and social justice
Learning Outcomes
critical thinking, research skills, global awareness, professional confidence, ability to analyse political systems and real-world issues
Professional Alignment (accreditation)
The course is professionally focused, with strong employability support and an integrated placement year, though not tied to a specific external accrediting body.
Reputation (employability rankings)
Manchester Met maintains strong graduate outcomes, with social science graduates reporting high employability and solid earnings 15 months after graduation.
One of the biggest strengths of studying Politics at Manchester Met is how much you learn by doing. This isn’t the type of degree where you sit in lectures for three years and then suddenly figure out the real world later — you start building practical skills from your first semester. You’ll work with real research methods, learn from academics who are actively involved in political debates, and get plenty of chances to apply what you’re learning to real issues. And of course, the placement or overseas study year adds a huge boost to your confidence and experience.
Here’s how MMU brings the subject to life:
A full placement year is built into your degree, where you can work with public-sector organisations, NGOs, community projects, research bodies, charities, or policy groups. This is a proper full-time experience — a chance to see how politics plays out in real workplaces and build connections that help after graduation.
The option to study abroad for a full year, letting you experience political systems, cultures, and global issues first-hand. This is ideal if you aspire to an international career or simply want to broaden your worldview.
Hands-on learning through applied research, especially in modules like Applied Research Methods for Politics and International Relations. You’ll learn how to gather data, analyse political behaviour, evaluate policy impact, and present findings — exactly the kind of skills used by think tanks, political consultants, and government analysts.
A final-year independent project where you choose a political issue you genuinely care about. Whether it’s climate policy, global security, digital politics, or social movements, you’ll design and conduct a full research study with support from experienced academics.
Access to MMU’s extensive library and digital tools, including online databases, political analysis resources, 24/7 study spaces, and dedicated help from subject librarians. Students consistently mention how helpful the digital support is — especially for research-heavy assignments.
A city that doubles as a learning environment. Manchester is rich with political organisations, community groups, cultural centres, and public events. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to attend talks, volunteer, join civic initiatives, or simply observe real political conversations happening around you.
Support from MMU’s Careers & Placement team, who will guide you through securing your placement, preparing your CV, and building the professional confidence employers expect.
