1 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re excited about studying politics and philosophy but feel you’d benefit from a supportive start, this Foundation Year is a perfect way in. It gives you the space to build strong academic skills while exploring the ideas, debates, and global issues that sit at the heart of both subjects.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year (Year 0)
Your foundation year is designed to ease you confidently into university-level work. You’ll take modules like Academic Practice 1 & 2 to strengthen your writing and research skills, while subjects such as Key Case Studies in International Relations, Philosophical Responses to the Contemporary World, and Modern Britain Since 1945 introduce you to the core themes you’ll explore later in the degree. By the end of the year, you’ll have the grounding needed to step into Year 1 with confidence.
Year 1
In your first full degree year, you dive into the essentials. You’ll study modules like Modern Political Thought, Introduction to Philosophy, and Comparative Politics & Institutions, which help you understand how political systems operate and how philosophical ideas shape the world around us.
Year 2
Your second year lets you start shaping your own academic direction. You’ll explore areas such as Identity, Culture & Politics, Ethics & Global Justice, and key Research Methods that teach you how to investigate real political and philosophical questions. This is where you start finding the themes that matter most to you.
Year 3 (Final Year)
In your final year, you specialise and bring everything together. Modules like Climate Politics & Philosophy, Global Politics & Philosophy, and your Independent Research Project allow you to investigate big questions in depth. You’ll graduate with a strong portfolio of work and a clear sense of where you want to go next.
Focus areas:
Power relations, ethics, global politics, justice, and philosophical inquiry
Learning outcomes:
Critical analysis, independent research, ethical reasoning, political interpretation, and strong communication skills
Professional alignment (accreditation):
While the programme isn’t tied to a specific accrediting body, it is structured around the analytical, ethical, and research skills that employers in public service, policy, education, advocacy, and the third sector look for.
Reputation (employability rankings):
According to official data, around 77% of graduates progress into work or further study within 15 months — supported by MMU’s strong teaching, resources, and employability training.
One of the best parts of starting this degree with a Foundation Year is that you get a gentle, supportive introduction to university-level learning while still engaging with real political and philosophical ideas. You won’t just sit in lectures — you’ll work in modern learning spaces, use digital tools, analyse real case studies, and build the academic and research skills you’ll need for the full degree. By the time you progress into Year 1, you’ll already feel comfortable with university work and confident in your abilities.
Here’s what your hands-on learning experience looks like:
Interactive PC-lab sessions and online learning platforms, helping you build digital research and study skills from the very beginning.
Group projects and collaborative tasks in modules like Approaches to the Humanities and Philosophical Responses to the Contemporary World, where you discuss ideas, work through real examples and develop teamwork skills.
Academic Practice 1 & 2, dedicated modules that help you learn how to write academically, reference correctly, plan assignments, analyse texts and present your ideas clearly.
Access to MMU’s modern campus facilities, including innovative learning spaces, comfortable study zones and a well-resourced library — part of the university’s major campus investment.
Support from specialist student services, including study skills tutors, the library team, and online academic resources that help you build confidence before stepping into the main degree.
