Politics BA(Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Brighton

Program Overview

If you’re someone who wants to understand how the world really works — who makes decisions, how change happens, and why societies function the way they do — the Politics BA (Hons) at the University of Brighton is built for you. The programme blends big ideas with real-world problem-solving, giving you the tools to think critically, debate confidently, and engage with the issues you care about.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year introduces you to the foundations of political study through modules like Political Ideas, Foundations in World Politics, and the creative Introduction to the Global Challenges Lab. You’ll learn how political systems developed, explore major thinkers, and practise presenting your ideas through modern formats like blogs, videos, and podcasts. It’s a year designed to help you find your voice and understand the huge range of political questions you can explore.

Year 2

In your second year, you begin shaping your own academic direction. Core modules such as Authority, Democracy and Justice, UK Politics, and Researching Politics deepen your understanding of political institutions and give you hands-on research skills. You can also choose optional modules like Debating Contemporary International Relations or War, Violence and Terror, allowing you to explore global conflicts, diplomacy, and the forces that shape today’s world events.

Final Year

Your final year focuses on applying everything you’ve learned. With modules like Activism and Social Change and the independent Politics Dissertation, you’ll investigate issues that matter to you and work closely with academics who are active researchers and campaigners. Optional modules such as Politics in the Middle East, Race and International Relations, or Radical Political Economy and Anarchist Politics give you the chance to build genuine expertise in a specialist area.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes studying Politics at Brighton feel so real is how quickly you step beyond textbooks and start doing politics. From your first year, you will be analysing global issues through creative formats, meeting people working in the field, and taking part in hands-on activities that show you how political ideas play out in everyday life. The course is built to help you grow as a communicator, researcher, and problem-solver, with plenty of space to explore your voice and interests.

And all of this happens through practical experiences such as:

  • Creating blogs, short films and podcasts in the Global Challenges Lab, where you learn to communicate political issues using modern media

  • Going on field trips, collecting data, and joining Q&A sessions with political figures through the Politics in Practice module

  • Completing a final-year dissertation where you design your own research project, gather evidence, and present your findings like a real political analyst

  • Choosing an optional professional placement year, giving you the chance to work in policy, NGOs, advocacy, public service or related sectors before you graduate

  • Learning directly from guest speakers — including activists, campaigners, journalists and NGO professionals — who share real-world insights from current political work

  • Developing digital and communication skills such as campaign design, political messaging and media storytelling, not just academic writing
