BA Politics and German

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bristol

Program Overview

This degree gives you the best of both worlds: a solid grounding in politics and international relations alongside German language and culture. It’s ideal if you want to understand global issues while becoming fluent in German—opening doors to international careers, travel, and cultural experiences.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You’ll start by exploring the three big foundations of politics: political theory, comparative and national politics, and international relations. At the same time, you’ll study German at your own level—whether you’re a complete beginner or already advanced—while discovering German literature, film, history, and culture.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into politics with more focused topics and expand your German studies by choosing options in areas like linguistics, visual culture, or modern history. This is the stage where you start tailoring the degree to your interests, while still strengthening your language skills.

Year 3 (Year Abroad)

Your third year takes you abroad to a German-speaking country. Whether you study at a partner university or take up a work placement, this is when your language and cultural confidence really takes off—you’ll live the experience, not just study it.

Year 4

Back in Bristol, you’ll pull everything together. Alongside advanced politics and German units, you’ll have the chance to work on a bigger independent project or dissertation, guided by expert academics. By the end, you’ll be equipped with both critical insights and fluent German for the next step in your career.

Focus areas

"Politics (political theory, comparative and national politics, international relations) plus structured German language study with options in literature, film, history, thought, linguistics, and visual culture."

Learning outcomes
