LLB Law and Politics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Edinburgh

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how laws shape our world and how politics drives change, the Law and Politics LLB (Hons) at Edinburgh is an exciting choice. This four-year degree blends the depth of a law qualification with the big-picture perspective of politics, giving you a unique mix of critical thinking, debate, and problem-solving skills that employers truly value.

Curriculum Structure

Years 1 & 2 – Building your foundation
You’ll start with the essentials of Scots and UK law — areas like Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and Contract Law — while also exploring political systems and ideas through courses such as Introduction to Politics and International Relations. Alongside these, you’ll have the chance to choose outside subjects, letting you keep your interests broad and flexible in your first two years.

Year 3 – Expanding your horizons
This year is all about broadening your perspective. Many students spend the year abroad at one of Edinburgh’s partner universities worldwide, gaining first-hand experience of another legal and political system. It’s a chance to grow academically, explore a new culture, and bring an international edge to your degree.

Year 4 – Specialising and deepening your expertise
In your final year, you’ll dive into advanced modules and choose areas that inspire you most — from International Law to Political Theory or European Union Law. You may also work on a dissertation or major project, giving you the freedom to explore a question you’re passionate about in real depth.

Focus areas: Law, politics, governance, international relations, constitutional systems.

Learning outcomes: By the end, you’ll not only understand how law and politics intersect, but you’ll also be confident in analysis, research, public debate, and structured argumentation — skills that set you apart in almost any career.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Edinburgh’s LLB is widely recognised in the UK and beyond. It provides the academic foundation often required for those aiming to train as solicitors or advocates in Scotland, while also opening doors to policy, civil service, and international work.

The University itself ranks in the world’s top 30 overall, with graduates highly sought after by employers worldwide.
