3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how governments work, why societies make the choices they do, and how global events shape everyday life, Southampton’s BSc Politics is a fantastic fit. This course gives you the chance to explore everything from British and international politics to democracy, elections, and today’s big issues like migration and media influence—while building the skills that employers really value.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You’ll start by laying the groundwork with modules like (Dis)United Kingdom? An Introduction to British Politics, Comparative Politics, and Introduction to International Relations. Alongside these, you’ll study Crises of the 21st Century and dive into Political Theory. It’s a year that mixes debates on real-world challenges with the core ideas that shape modern politics.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll look more closely at democracy, institutions, and global perspectives. Modules such as The Struggle for Democracy help you understand how political systems evolve, while options like Chinese Politics or The Future of Europe let you follow your own interests. You’ll also sharpen your research and analytical skills, which are essential for your final dissertation.

Year 3

Your final year is about independence and specialisation. You’ll carry out a dissertation project on a political question that inspires you, with support from expert staff. Alongside this, you can choose from a wide menu of modules, including Partisans, Public Opinion and Elections, Politics and Protest, or Reinventing Democracy. It’s your chance to shape your degree around what excites you most.
