Philosophy and Politics (BA)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

If you enjoy questioning ideas, debating real-world issues, and understanding how societies are shaped, Southampton’s BA Philosophy & Politics is the perfect fit. This degree brings together two powerful disciplines — exploring the big philosophical questions about truth, morality, and human nature while examining how political systems work and change — preparing you to think critically and influence the world around you.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundation
Your first year is all about discovering the essential ideas that shape philosophy and politics. You’ll explore how political systems develop through modules like Introduction to Political Theory and Democracy and the Modern State, while philosophy classes such as Ethics and Introduction to Philosophy teach you how to question assumptions, build strong arguments, and think logically. This year sets the stage for deeper exploration and helps you develop the skills to debate and reason effectively.

Year 2 – Deepening your knowledge
In second year, you’ll start tackling more complex ideas and tailoring your studies to your interests. A core philosophy module introduces you to modern philosophical thought from the 17th and 18th centuries, and you’ll choose from options like Philosophy of Mind, Epistemology, Moral Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science. Politics modules let you dive deeper into areas such as comparative politics, international relations, or political thought, while seminars and small-group discussions sharpen your critical thinking and communication skills.

Year 3 – Specialising and shaping your future
Your final year is your chance to specialise and bring everything together. You’ll choose from advanced philosophy modules on topics like metaphysics, ethics, or philosophy of language, and focus your politics studies on areas such as 21st Century Crises, International Security, or Advanced Political Theory. Many students complete a dissertation on a topic they’re passionate about, guided by expert supervisors — a valuable experience if you’re considering postgraduate study or research.
