BSc Hons Politics and Sociology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Surrey

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how politics shapes society — and how society, in turn, influences political decisions — Surrey’s Politics and Sociology BSc is the perfect choice. This degree combines two powerful disciplines to help you understand the forces driving change in the world, from government policies and global issues to identity, inequality, and culture.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation

Your first year lays the groundwork in both politics and sociology. You’ll explore the big thinkers like Marx, Weber and Durkheim in Conceptualising the Social World, and learn how governments and political systems operate in Introduction to Politics. You’ll also discover how to conduct real research in Researching the Social World, using both qualitative and quantitative methods (including R software). Other modules like Politics of Crisis and Social Divisions and Contexts tackle real-world issues such as globalization, inequality, and social change.

Year 2 – Developing Depth and Real-World Insight

In second year, you’ll dig deeper into how politics and society interact. Core modules like Making Public Policy: Theory and Practice show you how real policies are created, while Global Social Challenges: Research, Policy, Impact examines issues such as climate change, inequality, and public health. You can tailor your studies with options like International Political Economy, Migration and the Politics of Identity, or Quantitative Research Methods. Sociology-focused choices, such as Work, Employment and Society in Global Context or Critical Sociological Thinking, help you analyse how societies function in a globalised world.

Year 3 – Specialising and Shaping Your Expertise

Your final year is all about specialising in what interests you most. You’ll work on an independent research project (your dissertation) and choose from advanced modules like Negotiating Politics and Policy or Populism and Democracy in Comparative Perspective. If you’re interested in media and identity, you might study Political Communication or Understanding Sexualities. Other options include European Security and Diplomacy, Youth, Culture and Media, or Hate Crime – giving you the freedom to focus on the topics that matter most to you.
