Politics with Foundation BA Honours

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Westminster

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how the world works but feel you need more time or support before beginning a full degree, this Politics with Foundation programme is an ideal pathway. The foundation year gives you the confidence, academic skills, and subject grounding you need, and then smoothly transitions you into the full BA Politics degree — where you’ll explore how leaders make decisions, how societies change, and how global events shape everyday life.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year

Your journey begins with a year designed to ease you into university-level thinking. You’ll build essential skills through modules like Critical Thinking for Academic and Professional Development, Imagining Global Society and Politics, and Intercultural Communication. This year helps you understand global issues, improve your academic writing, and prepare you emotionally and academically for your honours years.

Year 1

Once you enter the BA Politics phase, you start exploring the real heart of political study. You’ll look at how the UK political system works in British Politics, examine modern challenges in Democracy in Crisis, and understand global issues through Dilemmas of International Development and The Global Politics of Migration. It’s a year that builds your curiosity and broadens your worldview.

Year 2

In your second year, you deepen your understanding of global regions and the political forces shaping them. You’ll study Democracy and Development in Asia and Africa, explore global power struggles in Geopolitics, and unravel conflict and peace in Global Security. You’ll also learn how to conduct real political research through Doing Political Research: Project Management in the Social Sciences.

Year 3

Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll take advanced modules like American Power in a Multipolar World, Digital Politics, and Foreign Policy and Diplomacy in a Changing World. You also choose between a traditional Dissertation or a more career-oriented Professional Report, giving you the chance to focus on a political issue you care deeply about.

The University of Westminster has a strong reputation for employability, global diversity and hands-on learning, supported by its central London location — a major advantage for politics students aiming for careers in government, policy and international relations.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the biggest advantages of studying Politics with Foundation at Westminster is that you’re learning in the middle of London — a city where politics, diplomacy, activism, and global decision-making happen every single day. Instead of just reading about political systems, you’ll see them in action. Your classes blend academic learning with real-life experiences, field visits, internships, and interactive workshops that help you build confidence and practical skills from the start.

And to give you a clear picture of what this looks like, here’s what you’ll actually experience:

  • Visits to major political institutions, including the Houses of Parliament, government departments, international organisations, and NGOs — helping you see how political decisions truly unfold.

  • An optional placement year or study abroad year, allowing you to work, volunteer, or study internationally and build your global perspective before graduating.

  • Exclusive internship opportunities for Politics students, including placements with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in cities like Geneva, Vienna, Dhaka, or London — giving you hands-on experience in migration policy, liaison work, and international development.

  • Access to Zone29, Westminster’s dedicated careers and enterprise hub, where you get personalised support, internship listings, mentoring, and career-building opportunities tailored to politics and international relations.

  • Interactive learning formats — debates, workshops, group projects, simulations, and role-plays — that strengthen your research, communication, and teamwork skills while helping you apply theory to real-world situations.

These experiences mean you won’t just graduate with knowledge — you’ll graduate with connections, confidence, and practical experience that set you apart.
