It’s perfect for students who want to understand government, society, and real-world challenges like inequality, public services, and community change.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year

Your foundation year prepares you for university-level study with practical, confidence-building modules such as Skills for Success, Exploring Social Issues, and Understanding Wolverhampton. You’ll develop writing, research, and teamwork abilities while looking at the real social challenges affecting communities today.

Year 1 (Level 4)

In your first full academic year, you’ll start exploring how politics actually works through modules such as Britain and the World, Social Policy in Practice, and Issues in Contemporary British Politics. You’ll learn how decisions are made, who makes them, and how they influence areas like health, education, welfare, and human rights.

Year 2 (Level 5)

At this stage, your learning becomes more applied and analytical. Modules like Community Engagement & Social Change, Contemporary Political Ideologies, and Comparative Social Policy help you understand how different societies tackle social issues and how communities drive change. You’ll also start linking theory with real policy debates.

Year 3 (Level 6)

In your final year, you get the chance to specialise and take more advanced, career-focused modules such as International NGOs & Policy Change, Political Concepts in Action, and Independent Project in Social Policy. You’ll carry out a major research project, sharpen your critical thinking, and build the skills needed for roles in government, NGOs, public service, policy analysis, and advocacy.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the biggest strengths of the BA (Hons) Politics and Social Policy with Foundation Year is how much real-world learning you get outside the classroom. Wolverhampton focuses on providing you with hands-on experience in the communities, organisations, and policy challenges you’ll eventually work with. You won’t just study how society functions — you’ll actively take part in research, community projects, digital learning, and engagement activities that prepare you for roles in government, NGOs, public service, and social change.

To make this practical learning feel real and purposeful, the university provides you with access to modern facilities, collaborative learning spaces, digital tools, and opportunities to work closely with local community groups. And as you progress through the degree, more modules involve group projects, case studies, evidence-gathering tasks and community-based work. Here’s how all of this comes to life:

Experiential highlights include:

  • Community-based learning in real organisations – certain modules allow you to partner with voluntary, local authority, or community groups, applying policy knowledge directly to social challenges.

  • Group projects built into modules – especially within Community Engagement & Social Change, where students work together on real community issues and present evidence-based solutions.

  • Access to the University of Wolverhampton’s modern learning ecosystem – including the Harrison Library, digital databases, collaborative study areas, and the university’s digital learning tools (Canvas, e-Vision, online research portals).

  • Practical case-study work – you will explore real issues such as poverty, health inequality, and social welfare through applied analysis, policy critiques, and community research tasks.

  • Digital literacy development – the programme integrates digital tools for research, presentations, data analysis, and policy evaluation, ensuring you graduate “digitally ready.”

  • Opportunities to engage with local communities – through research tasks, evidence gathering, reflection assignments, and community-focused modules that help develop professional empathy and real-world insight.
