3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of York

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about how power shapes societies and how nations interact on the global stage, York’s BA Politics with International Relations is the perfect choice. This degree helps you understand the big political questions of our time — from democracy and conflict to climate change and global cooperation — while building the skills to shape real-world decisions and policies.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundations
Your first year introduces you to the essential building blocks of political science. Through modules like Political Analysis, Introduction to Comparative Politics, Introduction to Political Theory: States, Liberty and Revolution, and Introduction to Global Politics, you’ll explore how governments work, why ideologies emerge, and how power operates at home and abroad. You’ll also tackle real-world challenges in Global Challenges: From Theory to Practice and work on collaborative projects in the York Policy Lab, all while learning core academic and research skills.

Year 2 – Deepening your perspective
In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into the forces shaping politics today. Core modules such as Theories of the State, International Relations Theory and Planet Politics, and Research Design sharpen your understanding of political systems and how scholars study them. You’ll also choose from a wide range of specialist options — from Can Democracy Work? and Global Political Economy to Politics of Development — tailoring your studies to the topics that excite you most.

Year 3 – Specialising and taking the lead
Your final year is all about applying what you’ve learned. You’ll complete an independent Dissertation, exploring a political question of your choice with the guidance of an expert supervisor. Alongside this, you can select advanced option modules such as Global Governance, Green Politics, Politics of the Middle East, or Democracy and Emergency. This is your chance to focus on the areas you’re most passionate about and graduate with a portfolio of research and analysis skills that employers value.

Plus, you can choose to spend a year on a professional placement or studying abroad, gaining real-world experience or international exposure that sets you apart after graduation.
