The University of Plymouth offers the MPsych (Hons) Psychology, an integrated Master's degree designed for students aiming to pursue a career in psychology with strong foundations in research and clinical applications. Unlike a standard undergraduate program, this four-year degree combines undergraduate-level learning with advanced postgraduate training, preparing students for careers in areas such as clinical psychology, research, and academia. The course is structured to help students develop both a theoretical understanding of human behaviour and the practical skills needed to work in real-world psychological settings. It is also accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), making graduates eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)—a key step toward becoming a Chartered Psychologist.
Curriculum Structure:
The curriculum at Plymouth is both comprehensive and progressive. Students begin with core modules in cognitive psychology, social psychology, biological psychology, and research methods. As the course develops, there’s a deeper focus on advanced psychological theory, data analysis, and applied psychological practice. In the later years, students take on independent research projects, placements, and clinical-related modules, helping them connect theory with real-world challenges. The fourth (Master's) year is research-intensive and includes a dissertation, as well as advanced modules that reflect current trends and applications in psychology.

This course is BPS-accredited, ensuring it meets the highest professional standards. With GBC eligibility upon graduation, students are in a strong position to continue toward specialist training in fields like clinical, forensic, health, educational, or occupational psychology.

Graduates of the MPsych program are highly employable, with career pathways in both applied psychology roles and academic research. Alumni have gone on to work in areas such as clinical practice, educational settings, mental health support, prison and probation services, and behavioural therapy. Others have pursued further training to become qualified Clinical or Forensic Psychologists or moved into healthcare, public services, and policy development.
Further Academic Progression:
The integrated nature of the degree means students complete a Master’s-level qualification by year four. However, many go on to pursue Doctorates in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) or PhDs in psychological research, depending on their career goals. The program provides a solid foundation for postgraduate study across a wide range of psychology specialisms.
