BSc Sociology and Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Aberystwyth University

Program Overview

If you're curious about how societies work and why political decisions shape our everyday lives, this degree brings both worlds together in a powerful way. It’s perfect for students who want to understand people, communities, power, inequality, and global change—while developing the analytical and communication skills needed for careers in government, NGOs, media, social research or community leadership.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation across both disciplines. You’ll explore how societies change through modules like Understanding Contemporary Society, while Politics modules such as Behind the Headlines and Politics in the 21st Century help you understand how power operates globally. You also develop key academic skills like critical thinking, research, debate and writing—skills you'll use throughout your degree.

Year 2

Your second year lets you dive deeper into the issues that interest you most. Politics modules such as People and Power: Understanding Comparative Politics Today and International Relations: Perspectives and Debates help you examine how political systems differ and why global events unfold the way they do. On the Sociology side, you might explore areas like social inequality, culture, identity or social change, connecting real-world social challenges with political structures and policies.

Year 3 (Final Year)

In your final year, you’ll take advanced options in both Sociology and Politics—topics like globalisation, social movements, political theory, or contemporary security issues. You’ll also complete a major independent project, choosing a topic that reflects your passions—whether it’s social justice, political behaviour, media, inequality or international conflict. This year ties together everything you’ve learned and prepares you for graduate roles or further study.

Focus areas:

society, political systems, social change, public policy, inequality, global politics

Learning outcomes:

critical thinking, sociological and political analysis, independent research, communication, policy evaluation

Professional alignment (accreditation):

While not tied to a specific accrediting body, the course is jointly delivered by two respected departments—Sociology and International Politics—giving you interdisciplinary training that employers value in public service, social research, and policy roles.

Reputation (employability rankings):

Both departments consistently score highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality, reflecting strong support and excellent graduate preparation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes this degree especially rewarding is how much you learn by doing. You won’t just study society and politics in theory — you’ll step out into the real world, work with real data, take part in political simulations, and get hands-on with sociological research. Aberystwyth’s approach is very practical, giving you the confidence to investigate social issues, understand political behaviour, and develop the skills employers look for.

Here’s what your practical learning looks like in action:

  • Field-based sociological research, where you go beyond the classroom to study communities, institutions and behaviours. You’ll learn how to conduct interviews, analyse social patterns, and work with archival materials to understand how societies evolve.

  • Parliamentary Placement Scheme opportunities, giving selected students the chance to work directly with an MP in Westminster or a Member of the Senedd in Cardiff — a rare opportunity to see how political decisions are shaped from the inside.

  • Crisis Games simulations, a signature Aberystwyth experience where you and your classmates role-play a fast-moving international political scenario. These events help you build negotiation, problem-solving and teamwork skills in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.

  • Strong digital and research support, with access to the university’s well-equipped library, online political and sociological databases, and IT tools that help you analyse data, prepare projects, and carry out independent research.

  • A vibrant learning community, where events, societies, workshops and guest talks help you connect with different viewpoints and build confidence in presenting your ideas.

Progression & Future Opportunities

This degree opens up a wide range of impactful career paths, because you graduate with something employers really value: the ability to understand people and the systems that shape their lives. Many students go on to roles such as Policy Analyst, Social Researcher, Community Engagement Officer, or Public Affairs/Government Relations Officer. The combination of sociological insight and political awareness makes you a strong candidate for roles in public service, NGOs, charity work, media, research, and advocacy.

To help you build a career you’re proud of, Aberystwyth gives you strong support throughout your degree:

  • Dedicated Careers Service that helps you explore career options, prepare for interviews, find internships, build a strong CV, and connect with employers in government, community development, research, and public policy.

  • Real-world political exposure through opportunities like the Parliamentary Placement Scheme, where selected students work directly with MPs in Westminster or Members of the Senedd in Cardiff — a major boost to your professional profile.

  • A highly trusted academic reputation, with Politics at Aberystwyth consistently rated highly for student experience and teaching quality, helping you stand out when applying for competitive roles.

  • Long-term, transferable value, because the skills you build — research, analysis, communication, understanding of social issues and political processes — are in demand across the public sector, NGOs, journalism, community organisations, and consultancy.

  • A strong graduate profile, built from fieldwork, crisis simulations, research projects, debates, and hands-on learning, giving you the confidence to take on real responsibility in your first job.

Further Academic Progression:

If you want to continue your studies, you’ll be well-prepared for postgraduate degrees in Public Policy, Sociology, Social Research Methods, International Relations, Human Rights, Global Development, or Political Communication. Students interested in research careers or think-tanks often progress into an MRes or PhD.
