Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Film Production at the University of Wolverhampton offers a truly hands-on, industry-focused journey into filmmaking — from the first spark of an idea to the final edit. It’s perfect for students who are passionate about visual storytelling, enjoy creative collaboration, and want to develop the full range of skills needed to succeed in film and screen media.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building strong foundations. You’ll learn how to research, plan and structure your productions while getting hands-on experience with camera, lighting, sound and editing. Modules like Making Films that Matter: The Film Industry and Screen Skills and Creative Production will introduce you to the essentials of filmmaking. You’ll also explore factual and studio production through modules such as Studio Production and Factual Filmmaking, giving you a well-rounded start to your creative journey.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll begin to work more independently and collaboratively as you develop your creative voice. Through modules like Ways of Seeing, you’ll refine your storytelling, cinematography, production design, and post-production techniques — from colour grading and sound design to visual effects. You’ll also have the chance to experiment with documentary and experimental filmmaking, broadening your perspective and deepening your technical expertise.

Year 3
Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll take full creative control of a major production project — from concept to completion — through modules such as Advanced Skills for Film, Major Film: Pre-Production, and Major Film: Production and Post. Using industry-standard equipment and workflows, you’ll produce a professional-level film and build a strong showreel that showcases your talent and prepares you for your next step into the industry.
