Program Overview

The BFA Architectural Design at Parsons School of Design, The New School, combines design methodology and creativity with the material, spatial, and making practices of architecture and urban design, making it well suited to students interested in shaping buildings, spaces, and urban environments. Curriculum Structure

First Year: Students begin with Parsons’ interdisciplinary foundation, developing creative and critical approaches to making and thinking through Integrative Studio 1, Space/Materiality, and Drawing/Imaging. They also study Sustainable Systems, Integrative Seminar 1, and Time, establishing early skills in spatial thinking, materials, sustainability, visual communication, and design investigation.

Second Year: Students move into the dedicated Architectural Design sequence through Architecture Design Studio 1, Representation and Analysis, and Architecture Design Studio 2. Materiality and Assembly and History of Architecture deepen their understanding of architectural representation, construction, historical context, scale, space making, and architectural systems.

Third Year: The curriculum expands toward environmental and architectural performance through Architecture Design Studio 3, Environmental Design: Architecture and Energy, and Architecture Design Studio 4. Students develop more complex design responses while examining energy, environmental conditions, and architectural issues through studio and liberal arts coursework.

Fourth Year: Students undertake advanced architectural research through Advanced Research Seminar: Constructed Environments and develop increasingly complex projects in Architecture Design Studio 5. The degree concludes with Architecture Design Studio 6: Capstone, allowing students to synthesize their research, design development, and architectural practice into a substantial final project.
