Program Overview

This major provides a broad background in the histories of art, photography, and architecture. Instruction focuses on the visual skills necessary for art analysis as well as the writing and speaking skills through which this analysis is articulated. Students pursuing an art history major prepare themselves for careers in professional education in the arts, gallery and museum curatorship, law, urban planning, historic preservation, and other professions demanding good writing skills and critical thinking. Students who intend to pursue graduate study in art history should be proficient in a foreign language and should include these courses in their study. Students who intend to pursue graduate study and/or a career in museums and arts administration should take MGMT 300. Students may do both the internship and study abroad, but only one is required.
