Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture

NA On Campus Bachelors Program

California State University Sacramento

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture at Sacramento State prepares students for professional careers in interior design and interior architecture through a blend of creative studio practice, architectural knowledge, technical skills, and professional preparation. Students learn to design functional, attractive, and responsible interior environments while exploring space planning, building systems, materials, digital visualization, and the social and environmental impact of design.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students establish a foundation in design thinking, creative experimentation, architectural design, and digital literacy. Courses such as Think Make, Architectural Design Fundamentals, and Introduction to Architecture and Interior Design Practice introduce students to the design process, spatial concepts, and the professional context of interior architecture.

Year 2: Students develop their understanding of architectural history, spatial planning, and digital design tools. Through History of Architecture: Prehistory to 1800, Architectural Space Planning, Beginning AutoCAD and SketchUP, Beginning Interior and Architectural Design, and Beginning Revit, students learn to analyze spaces and communicate design ideas using technical drawings and digital models.

Year 3: Students progress into specialized studio work and professional preparation, applying their skills to residential, commercial, or hospitality design projects. Courses such as Intermediate Interior Architecture Design Studio – Residential, Intermediate Interior Architecture Design Studio – Commercial, Professional Practice I, and Interior Materials, Finishes, Products, and Systems strengthen their ability to select materials, develop design concepts, and understand professional practice.

Year 4: Students consolidate their creative and technical skills through advanced studio work, building regulations, and career preparation. The Capstone Interior Architecture Studio, Building Regulations, Life Safety, and Accessibility, and advanced electives in building information modeling or architectural rendering help students prepare for professional practice and develop a portfolio of design work.

Focus Areas

Interior architecture, residential design, commercial design, hospitality design, architectural history and theory, space planning, digital modeling, building systems, materials and finishes, professional practice, sustainable and socially responsible design.

Learning Outcomes

Develop spatial planning and design skills, produce technical drawings and visual presentations, use digital design tools, evaluate materials and building systems, understand accessibility and life-safety requirements, communicate design concepts effectively, and prepare for professional interior design practice.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Sacramento State's BFA in Interior Architecture is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The upper-division curriculum is designed to develop the technical and design competencies needed for professional practice and preparation for the NCIDQ and/or California's IDEX examination. Students should verify the applicable examination, education, and experience requirements for the jurisdiction in which they intend to work.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Sacramento State's Department of Design reports that graduates have secured positions in architectural and interior design firms, government agencies, private corporations, furniture manufacturing companies, and design-related businesses. The university's published program information does not establish a specific interior architecture graduate employment rate, median salary, or program-level QS or Guardian ranking, so these figures should not be attributed to this degree.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Sacramento State places practical design work at the heart of its Interior Architecture program. Students develop their skills through project-based studio assignments, collaborative learning, professional critiques, building tours, and community service projects. As they progress, they learn to translate creative concepts into technical drawings, three-dimensional models, material specifications, and design solutions that respond to real-world needs.

Key experiential learning opportunities include:
- Design studios:
Students work through design problems in a supportive studio environment, developing concepts and refining proposals through project-based learning and feedback.
- AutoCAD and SketchUp: The Beginning AutoCAD and SketchUP course introduces computer-aided drafting, orthographic drawings, and three-dimensional building models.
- Autodesk Revit: The Beginning Revit course introduces building information modeling (BIM), including project setup, model development, views, and drawing-sheet layouts.
- Advanced digital modeling: Students can pursue advanced BIM, parametric and free-form modeling, visualization, and architectural rendering through upper-division courses and electives.
- Residential, commercial, and hospitality projects: Intermediate studios allow students to explore different interior environments and develop design solutions for specific settings.
- Capstone Interior Architecture Studio: Students undertake advanced design work that brings together spatial planning, creative concepts, technical knowledge, and presentation skills.
- Professional critiques and guest speakers: Guest lecturers and professional panel discussions help students understand industry expectations and receive feedback on their design work.
- Building tours and field trips: Visits to outstanding projects help students observe how design concepts, materials, and architectural decisions work in practice.
- Community and campus design projects: Students may participate in community service and projects connected to Sacramento State's developing campus.
- Professional practice and internship: Students can choose between Pro Practice – Career Preparation and Professional Practice IV – Internship to meet the relevant career-preparation requirement.
- Professional student community: The PRINTS student club represents the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), with activities that include professional speakers, workshops, and field trips.
