Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of California Berkeley

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration at UC Berkeley is a four-year dual-degree programme offered through the Management, Entrepreneurship, & Technology (M.E.T.) programme, combining aerospace engineering, business strategy, and technological innovation. Designed for students interested in aviation, spacecraft, engineering leadership, and entrepreneurship, it provides two Bachelor of Science degrees while developing the technical and business skills needed to turn complex engineering ideas into practical solutions.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

Students establish a strong foundation in mathematics, physical sciences, programming, economics, and business. Courses such as MATH 51, MAT SCI 45 & 45L, AERO ENG 1, and ENGIN 7 introduce mathematical reasoning, materials science, aerospace engineering, and computational problem-solving, while UGBA 196 – Managing Technological Innovation connects engineering concepts with business innovation.

Second Year

The second year develops students' engineering knowledge through advanced mathematics, physics, mechanics, and computational learning. Courses including AERO ENG 10, PHYSICS 7B, MATH 53, and ENGIN 40 or MEC ENG 40 help students understand engineering principles, thermodynamics, and the technical foundations needed for aerospace systems.

Third Year

Students advance into mechanical and aerospace engineering topics while building business and management expertise. Subjects such as MEC ENG 106, CIV ENG 126 or MEC ENG 104, and MEC ENG 100 strengthen engineering analysis, while UGBA 100, UGBA 101A, and UGBA 196 – Entrepreneurship and Strategic Growth develop organisational, strategic, and entrepreneurial capabilities.

Fourth Year

The final year integrates technical knowledge with business leadership and practical engineering applications. Students undertake MEC ENG 103 – Aerospace Lab and AERO ENG 100 – Capstone, alongside advanced technical electives and business courses such as UGBA 101B, UGBA 103, UGBA 104, and UGBA 106, bringing together engineering design, analysis, and management.

Focus Areas

Aerospace engineering, aerodynamics, aircraft systems, spacecraft technologies, mechanical engineering, engineering design, propulsion, controls, computational engineering, materials science, business administration, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, strategic management.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop the ability to apply engineering principles to aerospace systems, analyse technical problems, use mathematical and computational methods, understand engineering design and testing, evaluate business opportunities, manage technological innovation, make strategic decisions, communicate technical concepts, and integrate engineering knowledge with business management.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

UC Berkeley's engineering programmes are accredited through the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC), while the Undergraduate Business Degree Programme is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These provide recognised institutional and business-programme quality benchmarks.

Reputation (Employability)

The programme combines the academic resources of UC Berkeley's College of Engineering and Haas School of Business. Berkeley's M.E.T. programme also includes internships, career coaching, and enrichment activities to support professional development and practical exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students gain practical engineering and business experience through Berkeley's integrated M.E.T. curriculum, which combines aerospace and mechanical engineering with innovation, entrepreneurship, and business education. The programme includes an aerospace laboratory, a senior engineering capstone, technical electives, internships, and career coaching, helping students connect classroom learning with engineering applications and business challenges.

Students can develop practical skills through the following programme-specific opportunities:

  • Aerospace Engineering Laboratory: MEC ENG 103 provides laboratory-based learning related to aerospace engineering.

  • Aerospace Capstone: AERO ENG 100 allows students to apply engineering knowledge through a culminating aerospace engineering project.

  • Engineering design: Technical electives in areas such as propulsion, fluid mechanics, controls, space technologies, and computational tools support specialised engineering learning.

  • Programming and computational learning: ENGIN 7 or COMPSCI 61A introduces programming and computational problem-solving.

  • Technological innovation: UGBA 196 001 – Managing Technological Innovation explores how technological ideas can be developed into real-world applications.

  • Entrepreneurship: UGBA 196 002 – Entrepreneurship and Strategic Growth introduces business development and innovation strategies.

  • Internships and career coaching: M.E.T. provides programme-led internship opportunities, career coaching, and enrichment activities.

  • Interdisciplinary cohort: The small M.E.T. cohort supports close mentoring and interaction between engineering and business students.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration develop technical engineering knowledge alongside business, leadership, and innovation skills. This combination can prepare them for opportunities in aerospace manufacturing, aviation, space technology, engineering consulting, project management, and technology-focused businesses.

Potential career roles: Aerospace Engineer, Aerospace Systems Engineer, Flight Test Engineer, Engineering Project Manager.

Students can explore professional development opportunities through the following resources:

  • Career development: M.E.T. provides career coaching, internships, and enrichment activities to help students explore professional pathways and gain practical experience.

  • Employment outcomes: The programme's official catalog describes its career coaching and internship opportunities but does not provide a separate programme-specific employment rate or salary figure.

  • Industry exposure: M.E.T.'s internship and enrichment activities support engagement with technology innovation and entrepreneurship.

  • Accreditation value: The engineering programmes' ACS WASC accreditation and Haas Undergraduate Business Degree Programme's AACSB accreditation provide recognised academic quality frameworks.

  • Graduation preparation: The aerospace laboratory, capstone, technical electives, and business curriculum help students develop engineering application, project-based problem-solving, and management skills.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates may pursue master's or doctoral studies in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics, Astronautics, Space Systems Engineering, or related technical fields. Students interested in management and leadership may also consider postgraduate study in Engineering Management, Technology Management, or an MBA, subject to the admission requirements of the chosen institution.
