Business Analytics, BBA

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Miami

Program Overview

The Business Analytics, BBA is a STEM-designated specialization that prepares students to combine quantitative, statistical, and computational techniques to understand large datasets and turn them into better business decisions. It suits students interested in the intersection of business and data, with coursework covering data preparation and visualization, optimization, data analysis, Python, databases, machine learning, big data, econometrics, and marketing or supply-chain analytics.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students begin with the business and quantitative foundations of analytics through ECO 211 Principles of Microeconomics, MGT 100 Managing for Success in the Global Environment, and MKT 201 Foundations of Marketing. They also take MTH 161 Calculus I or MAS 110 Quantitative Applications in Business, followed by BUS 150 Business Analytics and MAS 201 Introduction to Business Statistics, establishing the mathematical and analytical base for later coursework.

Year 2: Students develop a stronger understanding of accounting, technology, statistics, and data analysis through courses such as ACC 211 Principles of Financial Accounting, BTE 210 Fundamentals of Business Technology and Innovation, and MAS 202 Intermediate Business Statistics. The second semester introduces MAS 432 Data Analysis, alongside FIN 302 Fundamentals of Finance and MGT 303 Operations Management, connecting quantitative analysis with real business functions.

Year 3: The programme moves into specialist analytics with MAS 332 Data Acquisition, Preparation and Visualization and MAS 342 Introduction to Optimization and Decision Making, helping students work with data and apply analytical methods to decision-making. Students then select specialist courses such as BTE 320 Python Programming: Fundamentals and Algorithms, BTE 423 Database Management Systems, MAS 548 Machine Learning for Analytics, or MAS 549 Big Data Analytics.

Year 4: In the final year, students deepen their specialization through additional major-choice and quantitative courses, with options including MGT 445 Supply Chain Modeling and Analysis, MKT 302 Marketing Research and Market Analysis, MKT 389 Digital Media Metrics, or FIN 320 Investment and Security Markets. Students complete the BBA with MGT 401 Strategic Management, bringing their analytical and business knowledge together in a strategic context.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The programme is strongly application-oriented, with the official curriculum specifically noting that several Business Analytics courses involve projects in which students evaluate a real-world system or process, build models of that system, and apply management-science methods to improve it. Students can also develop technical experience through Python programming, database management, machine learning, big-data analytics and data visualization, while Miami Herbert's career infrastructure connects students with internships, employer opportunities and hands-on career simulations.

Students can develop practical skills through:

  • Real-world analytical projects: Business Analytics coursework includes projects where students evaluate and model real-world systems or processes, then use management-science methods to identify improvements and communicate their findings through written and oral presentations.
  • Data preparation and visualization: MAS 332 Data Acquisition, Preparation and Visualization develops practical skills for working with business data and presenting analytical results.
  • Python programming: BTE 320 Python Programming: Fundamentals and Algorithms gives students a programming pathway directly within the Business Analytics specialization.
  • Database technologies: BTE 423 Database Management Systems allows students to develop knowledge of database systems relevant to data-driven business environments.
  • Machine learning and big data: Students can choose MAS 548 Machine Learning for Analytics and MAS 549 Big Data Analytics, providing opportunities to develop more advanced analytical capabilities.
  • Business analytics internships: Miami Herbert's career platform lists internships and full-time opportunities under the Business Analytics career pathway, including positions involving data analysis, business intelligence, process improvement and analytics.
