5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Rhode Island

Program Overview

The International Business Program (IBP) at the University of Rhode Island combines comprehensive business education with foreign language proficiency, cultural understanding, and international professional experience, preparing students for careers in the global marketplace. Designed for students interested in international business and cross-cultural careers, this five-year program leads to two bachelor's degrees: a B.S. in Business Administration in a selected business major and a B.A. in a foreign language, with opportunities to study and intern abroad.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Business Foundations and Language Development

Students begin developing their business knowledge while studying their chosen foreign language and its cultural context. Their business curriculum follows the selected major, which may include Accounting, Finance, General Business, Marketing, or Supply Chain Management, while language and cultural learning are integrated throughout the program.

Year 2 – Business Knowledge and Cultural Understanding

Students progress through the core requirements of their selected business major while continuing language study and cultural learning. Depending on their business pathway, they develop knowledge in areas such as financial management, accounting, marketing, management, or supply chain operations, building a foundation for international business practice.

Year 3 – Advanced Business Studies and International Preparation

Students deepen their business expertise through upper-level courses in their selected major while advancing their language proficiency and intercultural understanding. Academic advising and coordination with URI's Office of International Education help students prepare for the international study and internship experience that forms an important part of the program.

Year 4 – International Study and Professional Experience

Students have opportunities to study at partner universities abroad and undertake internships with participating companies in Asia, Europe, or Latin America. Examples of international business placements include Audi, BMW, Deutsche Bahn, General Motors España, Hasbro Asia, Toray Films Europe, UniCredit, and Volkswagen, allowing students to connect their academic learning with international professional environments.

Year 5 – Degree Completion and Professional Development

In the final year, students complete the remaining requirements for both their B.S. in Business Administration and B.A. in their selected language. They consolidate their business knowledge, language proficiency, and international experience, graduating with a combination of professional business preparation and cross-cultural expertise.

Note: The exact year-wise course sequence depends on the selected business major, language degree, admission year, and approved curriculum sheets. The above is a descriptive overview, not a fixed course-by-course study plan.
