Program Overview

Virginia Commonwealth University’s B.S. in Business with a concentration in Management/International Management combines broad business and management knowledge with specialized study of global business, international management, international marketing and international financial management. It is particularly suited to students who want to build management, analytical, communication and leadership skills while gaining international exposure through study abroad, consulting projects and global business experiences.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students build a foundation in business, quantitative analysis, communication and the broader university curriculum. Early business preparation includes areas such as financial reporting, managerial accounting and business problem solving, establishing the foundation for later management and international business coursework.

Year 2: Students develop core management and business competencies through subjects such as Leadership, Business Statistics II and Human Resource Management. The curriculum also develops decision-making and analytical skills that support the study of international business and organizational management.

Year 3: The international management concentration becomes more specialized, with International Economics, International Management and International Marketing forming key parts of the curriculum. Students can also explore areas such as International Financial Management, International Human Resource Management, consulting and intercultural communication through approved electives.

Year 4: Students complete advanced management and international-management coursework while using major electives to tailor their degree toward areas such as consulting, international finance, international HR, digital marketing or management internships. The program also provides opportunities to complete MGMT 493 – Internship in Management and BUSN 401 – International Consulting Practicum as part of the available elective structure.

VCU’s International Consulting Program, for example, combines consulting preparation in Richmond with a second client project in Rome involving students from the American University of Rome.

Students can gain practical experience through:

  • International Consulting Program (ICP): Earn six credits while completing consulting projects for real clients in Richmond and Rome, working with students from the American University of Rome.
  • MGMT 493 – Internship in Management: An approved international-management elective that provides an opportunity for structured professional experience.
  • BUSN 401 – International Consulting Practicum: A three-credit international-management elective focused on consulting practice.
  • Global Gateway: Short-term international experiences that combine business practices, design-thinking activities, multidisciplinary collaboration and cultural excursions.
  • Study-abroad opportunities: Students can pursue international study and are encouraged to consider an international studies or foreign-language minor.
  • Snead Hall facilities: Business students have access to computer labs, group breakout rooms, the IT Consulting Lab, Human-AI ColLab, RVA Views/Customer Experience Lab and other School of Business learning facilities.
