The Mathematics Education program prepares students to work as high school mathematics teachers in North Carolina and the region. Students take courses based in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and WCU’s nationally award-winning School of Teaching and Learning. Mathematics Education students repeatedly have won recognition as the Outstanding Mathematics Education Student for the western region of the state from the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Students take courses focused on how to teach mathematical concepts and teacher leadership in a diverse society as well as core courses including calculus, logic and proof, statistical methods, discrete structures and linear algebra. They complete internships and student teaching with mentorship from dedicated, experienced teachers and guidance from WCU faculty. A Mathematics Tutoring Center offers drop-in assistance, access to a library of textbooks and space for study sessions. Students also are encouraged to conduct research and have presented their work at conferences of the Mathematical Association of America and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, students make personal and professional connections in WCU’s Math Club and a student group affiliated with a state mathematics teachers organization.
