Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Aerospace Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Kentucky

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kentucky (UK) is the state's only undergraduate aerospace engineering program, offered through the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. The program combines fundamental engineering principles with specialised aerospace study, preparing students to analyse, design, and develop aircraft, spacecraft, propulsion systems, and other advanced aerospace technologies. Faculty expertise includes areas such as controls, propulsion, and hypersonics, giving students exposure to important areas of modern aerospace engineering.

Curriculum Breakdown (Years 1–4)

Year 1 – Foundations: Students begin with Engineering Exploration, Fundamentals of Engineering Computing, Calculus, Physics, and General Chemistry. These courses establish the mathematical, scientific, computational, and engineering foundation required for further study.

Year 2 – Core Engineering Concepts: Students progress into Statics and Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Materials Science. The emphasis is on understanding forces, motion, energy, fluid behaviour, and material properties that influence aerospace systems.

Year 3 – Specialised Aerospace Topics: Students move into core aerospace subjects including Aerodynamics, Propulsion Systems, Flight Mechanics, and Control Systems. These courses develop the ability to analyse aircraft performance, propulsion, stability, flight behaviour, and control.

Year 4 – Integration and Application: Students consolidate their knowledge through a Capstone Design Project, advanced aerospace electives, laboratory work, and technical communication. The capstone provides an opportunity to integrate multiple areas of engineering and work collaboratively on a substantial aerospace design challenge.

Focus Areas: The program emphasises aerodynamics, propulsion systems, flight mechanics and controls, structural analysis, systems engineering, and aerospace design, providing students with broad technical preparation for the aerospace sector.

Learning Outcomes: Graduates develop aerospace design expertise, analytical and problem-solving abilities, technical skills, teamwork, and communication capabilities. The curriculum prepares students to apply engineering principles to complex aerospace systems and contribute effectively to multidisciplinary engineering projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is currently seeking accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. If accreditation is granted, it is expected to apply retroactively to students who have completed the program. Therefore, the program should not currently be described as ABET-accredited.

Reputation (Employability): The University of Kentucky's aerospace engineering program benefits from specialised faculty expertise and its position as the only undergraduate aerospace engineering program in Kentucky. Graduates can pursue opportunities in aerospace design, propulsion, flight controls, aircraft systems, defence, space technology, and engineering research, as well as continue to advanced study.
