Bachelor of Science in Construction Management

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Florida International University

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management at Florida International University (FIU) is a 4-year, 120-credit on-campus program that combines project management, engineering, architecture, and business to prepare students to manage construction projects from planning through completion. It suits students interested in the built environment and develops skills in cost estimating, scheduling, construction safety, quality management, construction materials and methods, financial management, and project management, with opportunities to study emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and construction robotics.

Curriculum structure

First Year: Students begin with the foundations of construction and university study through BCN 2210 – Materials and Methods, BCN 1272 – Plans Interpretation, and ENC 1101 – Writing & Rhetoric, alongside mathematics, natural sciences, communication, and the freshman experience. The curriculum introduces students to construction materials, methods, interpreting construction plans, and the academic communication skills needed for the rest of the degree.

Second Year: Students move into applied construction subjects such as BCN 2280 – Surveying, BCN 2253 – Building Drawing, and BCN 2405 – Structural Design I, supported by PHY 2053 – Physics without Calculus, business statistics, accounting, economics, and legal-environment studies. This stage strengthens students’ understanding of construction documentation, structural principles, measurement, and the business context of construction projects.

Third Year: The program becomes strongly focused on construction operations through BCN 3027 – Principles of Construction Management, BCN 3611 – Construction Cost Estimating I, BCN 3720 – Construction Scheduling I, BCN 3727 – Construction Sitework and Equipment, and BCN 3730 – Construction Safety. Students then progress to BCN 4612 – Construction Cost Estimating II, BCN 4724 – Construction Scheduling II, BCN 3762 – Building Codes, and BCN 3761 – Construction Documentation, building the technical and management capabilities required to coordinate projects.

Fourth Year: The final year develops advanced professional capabilities through BCN 4431 – Structural Design II, BCN 4465 – Temporary Structures, BCN 4561 – Environmental Control I, BCN 4703 – Management of Construction Projects, and BCN 3740 – Legal Aspects of Construction. Students also complete BCN 3753 – Financial Management of Construction Organizations, MAN 3022 – Introduction to Management, electives, and BCN 4910 – Senior Project, which integrates knowledge gained across the undergraduate curriculum into a senior-level construction management project.

Focus areas: Project management, construction estimating, construction scheduling, construction safety, construction materials and methods, structural design, environmental control, building codes and quality control, financial management, construction documentation, and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and construction robotics.

Learning outcomes: Students develop the ability to plan and manage construction projects, estimate costs, schedule work, coordinate construction operations, interpret construction documents, apply safety and quality-control principles, understand construction law and finance, manage project resources, and integrate technical and business knowledge into professional construction practice.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The BS in Construction Management is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), the accrediting agency recognized by CHEA for four-year baccalaureate programs in construction, construction science, construction management, and construction technology. FIU lists the BS in Construction Management as accredited from 2024 through 2032.

Reputation (employability rankings): FIU is ranked No. 46 among U.S. public universities and No. 100 overall in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 rankings; FIU also reports that the Moss School of Construction connects students with more than 60 construction-industry recruiters through its career expo, with employers recruiting for internships, co-ops, and full-time positions.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management at Florida International University connects classroom learning directly with the construction industry through internships, site visits, hands-on projects, and industry mentoring. Students can work on real-world construction problems through the senior design capstone, while the Moss School of Construction provides access to South Florida’s active construction industry, industry recruiters, and construction-focused learning opportunities.

Students gain practical experience through:

  • Senior Design Capstone: In the final two semesters, students work in teams with faculty and industry mentors to solve real-world engineering problems and develop a project from initial planning through design, construction planning, and budgeting.
  • Internships: The program specifically provides internship opportunities that allow students to gain practical construction-industry experience beyond the classroom.
  • Construction site visits: Students can participate in site visits to connect construction-management concepts with actual projects and observe professional construction practices.
  • Advanced construction technology: Program electives allow students to explore emerging technologies including artificial intelligence and construction robotics, giving them exposure to technology-driven approaches to construction management.
  • Industry mentoring: The senior design experience is supported by industry mentors, giving students professional guidance while they work through realistic construction-management challenges.
  • Moss School of Construction: Students have access to the Moss School of Construction, which provides hands-on learning, expert instruction, and connections with the South Florida construction industry.
  • Industry recruitment and internships: The Moss School’s Career Expo connects students with 60+ construction-industry recruiters, providing opportunities to pursue internships and full-time positions.
  • Construction-focused student activities: FIU’s construction community includes professional organizations and activities that have included guest lectures, industry conferences, field trips, and service projects, giving construction students additional opportunities to engage with the profession.
  • Engineering Center: The program is housed within FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing, with the Engineering Center serving as a major 40-acre engineering facility focused on innovation and research.
