4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology is a 4-year, on-campus program that prepares students to plan, design, and manage infrastructure including structures, transportation systems, water systems, and other built-environment projects. The program combines engineering fundamentals with mathematics, science, computation, humanities, business engineering management, and hands-on design, while allowing students to develop interests in structural, geotechnical, water resources, environmental engineering, and construction management.
Curriculum structure
Year 1: Students begin with the scientific and mathematical foundations of engineering through courses such as CH 115 – General Chemistry I, MA 121 – Differential Calculus, and MA 122 – Integral Calculus. They also start developing engineering design and computational skills through ENGR 111 – Introduction to Engineering Design & Systems Thinking and ENGR 116 – Intro to Programming & Algorithmic Thinking.
Year 2: The second year develops the mechanics and measurement skills needed for civil engineering, including CE 261 – Mechanics of Materials, CE 381 – Civil Engineering Measurements Lab, and ENGR 212 – Design of Dynamical Systems. Students also build broader engineering capabilities through subjects such as ENGR 234 – Thermodynamics and ENGR 311 – Design with Materials.
Year 3: Students move deeper into civil engineering analysis through CE 342 – Fluid Mechanics, CE 373 – Structural Analysis, and CE 304 – Water Resources Engineering. The curriculum also introduces CE 365 – Numerical Modeling in Civil and Environmental Engineering, CE 399 – Civil Engineering Project Management, and CE 483 – Geotechnical Engineering, connecting technical analysis with infrastructure and project delivery.
Year 4: The final year focuses strongly on advanced design and professional application through CE 423 – Engineering Design VII, CE 424 – Engineering Design VIII, CE 484 – Reinforced Concrete Design, and CE 486 – Structural Steel Design. Students also complete technical electives and choose between advanced areas such as CE 508 – Transportation Engineering or CE 541 – Project Management for Construction, giving them flexibility to align their studies with career interests.
Focus areas: Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, construction management.
Learning outcomes: Complex engineering problem solving; engineering design considering public health, safety, environmental, social and economic factors; technical communication; ethical and professional judgment; teamwork and leadership; experimentation and data analysis; lifelong learning; and understanding the pathway from technology conception to market.
Professional alignment (accreditation): The Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.
Reputation (employability rankings): Stevens reports 100% finalized six-month outcomes for the Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering department, with an average starting salary of $80,100 for department graduates in its 2025 Careers Report. Stevens is also ranked #72 in the U.S. for Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs by U.S. News & World Report 2027 and #12 nationally for Best Career Placement by The Princeton Review 2024.
