Bachelors in Electrical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Vanderbilt University

Program Overview

Vanderbilt University’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science offers an interdisciplinary engineering education that combines mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and a personalised concentration. It is ideal for students who want to explore different engineering disciplines or combine technical knowledge with interests such as engineering management, materials science, environmental engineering, or science communication.

Curriculum Structure:

The following year-by-year outline is a suggested progression based on the program’s curriculum requirements; individual course choices depend on the student’s approved concentration and academic plan.

Year 1: Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Foundations:

Students build a strong foundation in mathematics, physical sciences, computing, and introductory engineering. Courses such as Introduction to Engineering (ES 1401–1403), Calculus (MATH 1300 and MATH 1301), and introductory chemistry help students develop analytical thinking, technical problem-solving, and an understanding of different engineering fields.

Year 2: Engineering Fundamentals and Core Knowledge:

Students advance into engineering analysis and begin shaping their academic interests through core engineering courses. Engineering Fundamentals, Computer Science (CS 1101 or CS 1103), and Engineering Mathematics strengthen computational, quantitative, and technical skills that can be applied across engineering disciplines.

Year 3: Concentration and Specialisation:

Students select engineering courses that align with their intended career direction, working with an academic adviser to develop an approved sequence of study. Depending on their interests, they may focus on Engineering Management, Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Communication of Science and Technology, while taking relevant technical electives.

Year 4: Advanced Electives and Senior Capstone:

Students complete advanced engineering electives and bring their learning together through the senior capstone experience. ES 4951 and ES 4959 form the senior capstone sequence, enabling students to apply engineering concepts, project planning, and problem-solving skills to a substantial design or applied project.

Focus Areas:

Engineering management, materials science and engineering, communication of science and technology, environmental engineering, engineering mathematics, transportation engineering, technical communication, interdisciplinary engineering, technology development and innovation.

Learning Outcomes:

Apply mathematics, science, and engineering fundamentals to technical problems; analyse information and develop practical solutions; integrate knowledge from different engineering disciplines; communicate technical ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences; collaborate on engineering projects; and develop an individual study plan aligned with academic and career goals.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):

Vanderbilt University is institutionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). However, the Engineering Science B.S. program itself is not ABET-accredited, reflecting its flexible, individually tailored curriculum. Students seeking professional engineering licensure should carefully check the requirements of the jurisdiction and career path they intend to pursue.

Reputation and Employability:

Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering combines interdisciplinary learning, faculty-guided research, and access to modern laboratories and maker spaces. The university reports that 97% of the Class of 2025 graduates who intended to enter the workforce were employed, while 93% of those intending to pursue graduate or professional study were admitted; these figures apply to the School of Engineering’s reported outcomes, not exclusively to Engineering Science majors.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Vanderbilt’s Engineering Science program offers opportunities to apply classroom knowledge through design projects, research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

• Introduction to Engineering (ES 1401–1403): Build foundational engineering knowledge through introductory design and problem-solving activities.

• Senior Design and Capstone: Apply engineering principles to a substantial project that develops design, analysis, and teamwork skills.

• The Wond’ry: Explore innovation, prototyping, entrepreneurship, and creative problem-solving.

• Engineering Laboratories and Maker Spaces: Gain practical experience using engineering tools, equipment, and design resources.

• Faculty-Supervised Research: Explore research opportunities and develop analytical and technical skills under faculty guidance.

• Academic Advising: Plan an interdisciplinary curriculum aligned with your academic interests and career goals.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates can pursue careers across engineering, technology, research, project coordination, and consulting, depending on their chosen concentration and experience.

• Engineering Analyst: Evaluate technical problems and help develop engineering solutions.

• Engineering Project Coordinator: Support project planning, timelines, resources, and team communication.

• Technology Consultant: Help organisations assess technology needs and improve technical processes.

• Materials Research Assistant: Support research into materials, their properties, and potential applications.

• Environmental Research Assistant: Contribute to projects involving environmental systems and sustainability.

• Vanderbilt Career Center: Access career guidance, job-search resources, and professional development support.

• School of Engineering Academic Services: Receive academic guidance for planning coursework and interdisciplinary concentrations.

• Research and Innovation Opportunities: Develop technical and research experience through suitable projects and faculty mentorship.

• Interdisciplinary Concentrations: Tailor your studies to areas such as engineering management, materials science, environmental engineering, or science communication.

Further Academic Progression:

Graduates may pursue master’s degrees in engineering, engineering management, materials science, environmental engineering, technology management, or related disciplines, subject to each institution’s admission requirements.
