BS in Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Florida International University

Program Overview

Florida International University (FIU) offers a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, which is an ongoing program designed to equip students with a solid education in the theoretical principles as well as real-world skills needed in mechanical engineering. Through studying for four years, students acquire a rich foundation in mechanical systems, materials, thermodynamics, and design that allows them to secure employment in areas such as the automotive industry, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, and robotics. FIU's curriculum focuses on building problem-solving ability and innovation to enable graduates to address actual engineering challenges effectively.

Curriculum Structure:
The FIU Mechanical Engineering program blends rigorous foundation classes with hands-on experiences:
General Education Requirements: These are basic subjects in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and communication to create a wide-ranging academic foundation.
Core Mechanical Engineering Courses: Students study key courses like mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, dynamics and control systems, and mechanical design.
Laboratory and Design Courses: Experimental courses emphasize laboratory work along with engineering design in order to provide students with the opportunity to apply concepts in real-life contexts.
Senior Capstone Project: The students participate in a group design project in their final year, using their skills to develop innovative engineering solutions to real-world problems.

Accreditation:
The program is accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), guaranteeing that it complies with high standards of quality used internationally and prepares students as professional engineers.

Campus Location:
Florida International University is situated in Miami, Florida, where students are provided with cutting-edge laboratories, research centers, and business alliances in one of America's most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

FIU encourages experiential learning to supplement classroom lectures with a range of opportunities for students to gain real-world experience:
Undergraduate Research: Students can work with faculty on state-of-the-art projects such as renewable energy, robotics, and materials science.
Internships and Cooperative Education: Students gain internships with leading companies in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries, exposing them to valuable industry knowledge and experience.
Design and Student Organization Competitions: Mechanical Engineering students participate in clubs like the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and in robotics and design competitions, enhancing teamwork and creativity.
Global Learning Opportunities: FIU provides international study and research opportunities, enabling students to broaden their perspectives and apply engineering skills globally.

Progression & Future Opportunities

FIU provides integrated career support through its Career and Talent Development Center, which includes:
Career advice, résumé review, and interviewing to allow students to market themselves well to employers.
Job fairs and networking events putting the students directly in touch with potential employers in various fields of engineering.

Employability
FIU Mechanical Engineers are highly sought after by employers and often find employment with top companies like Siemens, General Motors, and Florida Power & Light, government, and research organizations. The majority of graduates pursue design engineering, manufacturing, energy systems, and aerospace careers.

Academic Progression
Students who wish to proceed with further studies can pursue postgraduate levels in the form of a Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Energy Systems, or even interdisciplinary ones like Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, depending on the strong foundations developed through the undergraduate course.
