The primary aim of the science of linguistics is to study the use and organization of human language in coding and communicating knowledge. The University of Oregon s Department of Linguistics takes a functional, cognitive approach to language study. Students start with the idea that language evolved as a communicative system, and use this as the core tenant of building and learning linguistic theories. You will also find instruction in the nature of human language, the structural variety of individual languages, and the methodology of conducting a linguistic investigation.You will have the opportunity to participate in research with faculty members who study indigenous languages in North and South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.Linguistics cultivates key intellectual abilities that combine well with many other disciplines. You will gain skills in data analysis, reasoning and argumentation, and communication.
