History is the study of how societies and cultures across the world change over time. History concentrators learn to write and think critically, and to understand issues from a variety of perspectives. The department offers a wide variety of courses concerned with changes in human experience through time, ranging from classical Greek and Roman civilizations to the histories of Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia. While some courses explore special topics, others concentrate on the history of a particular country (e.g. China or Brazil) or period of time (e.g. Antiquity or the 20th century).

Profile Assessment: Undergraduate applicants interested in law may choose Pre-Law, Political Science, Economics, History, Philosophy, International Relations or another field. Debate, Model United Nations, mock trials, student government, journalism, advocacy, research and community service may demonstrate critical thinking and communication.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school. Relevant APs can strengthen an application and may earn university credit, but are not compulsory unless the university or programme explicitly requires them.Extracurricular activities: Estimated contribution: 20–30%. Brown values intellectual curiosity, independence, creativity and community engagement. Activities can demonstrate how the student might use the Open Curriculum to connect different interests.
