UChicago pioneered a curriculum devoted to civilization studies that provides students with a strong intellectual foundation. Historians worldwide use the series Readings in Western Civilization, developed by UChicago faculty. The department, ranked in the top 8 of 111 reviewed by the National Research Council, continues to lead in developing such programs and offers a wide range of specializations, methodologies, and philosophies. Enhancing the curriculum are opportunities for research and internships at the Chicago Historical Society, the Newberry Library, and the DuSable Museum of African American History, as well as study-abroad options in settings such as Berlin, Rome, Oaxaca, Paris, and Pune.

Profile Assessment: Undergraduate applicants interested in law may choose Pre-Law, Political Science, Economics, History, Philosophy, International Relations or another field. Debate, Model United Nations, mock trials, student government, journalism, advocacy, research and community service may demonstrate critical thinking and communication.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school. Relevant APs can strengthen an application and may earn university credit, but are not compulsory unless the university or programme explicitly requires them.Extracurricular activities: Estimated extracurricular contribution: 15–25%, The University of Chicago places particular emphasis on academic curiosity, intellectual independence and the quality of written responses.
