University of Miami

Program Overview

The University of Miami’s Dual-Degree Program in Law, also known as the 3+3 program, allows eligible undergraduate students to complete their bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor (J.D.) in six years instead of the usual seven years or more. It is designed for academically strong students who want to prepare for a legal career early while completing their undergraduate major before moving into professional law studies.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

Students begin their undergraduate studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, building a foundation in their chosen major while completing general education and other degree requirements. They explore subjects that develop critical thinking, research, writing, and analytical skills, which are valuable for future legal studies.

Second Year

Students continue working toward their chosen undergraduate degree and may apply to the Dual-Degree Program after completing their first year. Applicants must meet the program’s academic requirements and submit the required application materials, including recommendations and a supplemental application. Students should work with their undergraduate adviser to confirm their eligibility and plan their remaining coursework.

Third Year

Students complete the undergraduate coursework required for their major and prepare to transition to the School of Law. The program requires students to complete 90 credits toward their undergraduate degree before entering law school, including major and minor requirements. Admission to the J.D. program remains subject to meeting the law school’s admission requirements.

Fourth Year

Students begin their first year of law school, studying core legal subjects such as Civil Procedure I, Contracts, Elements, Torts, and Legal Communication and Research I. In the spring semester, courses include Property, Criminal Procedure, U.S. Constitutional Law I, and Legal Communication and Research II, giving students a foundation in legal principles, procedures, and research.

Fifth and Sixth Years

Students continue their J.D. studies through upper-level law courses and electives, building specialised knowledge and practical legal skills. The curriculum includes requirements in legal writing, professional responsibility and ethics, and skills-based coursework. Under the program’s published structure, students complete the remaining requirements for both degrees within six years.
